The Importance of a Good Suit

Have you ever watched the TV-series, SUITS? If you have, you would probably be familiar with Harvey Specter harping on Mike Ross on getting a decent suit right off on his first day at work. But if you didn’t notice that, you would have most likely seen Specter in his suit and you go daaaaam son because we all know he looks good in his suits. So, the question that prevails is: does the man makes the suit or the suit makes the man? Thankfully, you don’t need a nice set of broad shoulders, pecs or a six pact to look good in a suit. It will definitely help but you can still look good in a suit AS LONG AS it fits you well. Therefore, it’s the suit that makes the man. You can get dozens of articles off the internet telling you how to find the right suit for your body type as well as a wide variety for you to choose from here in ASOS Singapore. However, even if you’ve found a perfectly tailored suit to your body, knowing HOW and WHERE to wear it is equally as important.

What’s the Occasion?

Before jumping in on suiting up with your favourite suit from ASOS Singapore, always decide on what the occasion is. Are you going to attend a wedding, wearing it to a business meeting or going for a black-tie event? There are different types of suit for different types of use – and you definitely wouldn’t want to be showing up in black-tie event in a sports jacket nor to a casual business lunch in a tuxedo.

To begin, start deciding between your single-breasted jacket and your double-breasted jacket. A double-breasted jacket is more formal than the single-breasted jacket because it comes with peak lapels as oppose to the notch lapels from the latter. But say, you don’t own a double-breasted jacket and you’re suiting up for a more formal dinner. The next option is for you to opt for the single-breasted jacket but in a structured or fitted silhouette. The structured silhouette is the most formal for a suit jacket because the shoulders are padded and the waist is trimmed, presenting the wearer with an almost hourglass figure. The fitted silhouette on the other hand, should be worn by fitter men as they come with minimal padding giving a tailored fit.

Button-up (Properly!)

Probably the most important bit to make a good first impression, knowing HOW to button your jacket tells a lot about yourself. Single-breasted suit typically comes with 1-3 buttons. If yours come with one button, it should always remained button unless you sit down. For those of you with the 2-buttoned jackets, always button the top button and leave the second one UN-buttoned only to unfasten the first one whenever you take a seat. For the jackets with three buttons, always leave the first and the last unbuttoned while fastening on the middle one with the exception of sitting down.

To Boutonniere or Not?

The boutonniere is worn on the left lapel of the suit but only higher end suits come with a functional lapel button. You don’t need a special occasion to wear it but pay heed to the flower that you’ll be wearing – more colourful flowers are acceptable for more casual events while simple white and red blooms are for more formal events. So, go for it if your suit comes with a lapel button hole as you’ll definitely attract positive attention! However, if you don’t have a suit with a lapel hole, you can now get an affordable one thanks to ASOS Singapore!
