Can your shower curtain be washed?

Yes, definitely! Generally, shower curtains are made of plastic materials which are suitable to be washed. Unless the shower curtain has a hole in it, you do not have to throw it out once it gets dirty. All you have to do is give it a quick cleanse every once in a while.

Pre-treat your shower curtain

It is recommended to pre-treat your shower curtain so that it does not build up scum from soap overtime. You can run it through your washing machine by setting it on rinse cycle and add a little distilled white vinegar to it. Make sure the water is not set too hot but warm enough because chances are your shower curtain will melt. Once the rinse cycle is complete, simply hang it on the shower curtain rod to dry.

Tips on washing your shower curtain

Similar to pre-treating your shower curtain, the first method is to practically wash it in the washing machine. Combine the warm water with vinegar, baking soda or laundry detergent. Make sure you only pick one out of the three cleaning agents. Later on, hang the shower curtain back on the shower rod. Another method you can try is to hand wash your shower curtain with a cloth. Soak the cloth in warm water and wring it till its damp. After that, sprinkle some baking soda on it. Scrub the entire shower curtain with the cloth and rinse it with warm water. You can also use a toothbrush to scrub hard to remove stains.

Whether if you choose to wash it with a washing machine or by hand, it is very important to air dry it afterwards. Remove the excess water by giving it a good shake, then hang it up to let it completely dry. If possible, hang it up on a washing line in a cool shaded area and allow it to air dry.

How often should a shower curtain be washed?

If you shower pretty often or share a bathroom with someone, it is recommended to wash it every once a month. At a minimum, you should try to wash it at least once every three months. On the plus side, the cleaning process would not take a long time. This is because; having it regularly cleaned will prevent mould and mildew from building up as well as help maintain the quality of your shower curtain.
