Samsung A50 Specs & Review

Sporting a polished design with curved edges, Samsung Galaxy A50 has a glossy finish at the back that is akin to the back of the A30. The body of the phone is made entirely of plastic but feels solid; the back cover is layered with a reflective coating that exhibits alluring colours when shone under the light. At first glance, the A50 features a teardrop-shaped notch on the top, allowing for a virtually bezel-less design, though the chin is noticeable. It features the same Infinity-U waterdrop notch, and its chin is much slimmer than the preceding models in A series. Despite being tall and large, Samsung is wise in integrating ergonomic design into the device to make it comfortable to hold. Looking at the bottom edge, a speaker grille, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB Type-C Port are present.

The smartphone boasts a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED panel with a Full HD+ screen resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels, 19:5:9 aspect ratio and 404-pixel ratio density, protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 against scratches and scuff marks. Thanks to its Super AMOLED display, the screen displays vibrant colours both indoors and outdoors while ensuring good contrast and saturation. As per usual, Samsung has display settings for you to configure the colour calibration and brightness level. It’s safe to say the Galaxy A50 is a decent device for entertainment consumption.

Powered by an octa-core Exynos 9610 processor, the Samsung Galaxy A50 runs all sorts of apps, tabs, and games in a stable manner, including PUBG and Asphalt 9. In particular, there’s no lagging or stuttering when PUBG is running on Ultra mode. In addition, Samsung Galaxy A50 is fitted with 4GB or 6GB RAM. As for its internal memory, the phone has 128GB of storage that can be expanded up to 512GB with a microSD card. The phone operates on Android 9.0 Pie with One UI 2.0, both of which can receive updates from time to time. Having a bloatware-free software gives the smartphone an edge too, as that offers a lot more storage space. Users can uninstall most preloaded apps to maximise their phone storage.

In Samsung Galaxy A50’s triple-camera department, there’s a 25MP f/1.7 main camera, an 8MP f/2.2 123-degree wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor for bokeh effects. Using the main camera, daylight shots are pretty excellent, as they showcase fine details and accurate colours - as with other Samsung smartphones. But when taking photos at night or in low-light settings, the camera fails to capture details and colours. The camera’s Live Focus feature helps produce portrait shots with a defocused background. Other features included in the camera software are the AR Emoji and Hyperlapse, elevating the photography game to the next level.

Battery Life

Samsung Galaxy A50 packs a 4,000mAh battery, similar to the Google Pixel 4 XL, but supports fast charging of 15W. It takes only one and a half hour for the phone to refill its battery juice from 0% to 100%. With normal usage comprising web browsing, gaming, and Youtube viewing, the smartphone experiences an average juice reduction of 12% every hour. That said, it’s common to see some remaining battery juice in the phone after being left on idle mode for 2 days.

Fingerprint Sensor

You can unlock the Galaxy A50 with its in-display fingerprint sensor. The fly in the ointment, however, is that the optical on-screen fingerprint sensor can be a little unresponsive or exhibit some lags on certain occasions. An alternative to the fingerprint sensor is the Face Unlock feature which works faster but isn’t as secure as fingerprint unlock.

In a nutshell, the Samsung Galaxy A50 is a strong contender among all mid-range phones although its camera software could use some refinements. For a phone that possesses lots of features seen in flagship phones, its affordability wins it all. If playing PUBG on a smartphone is your primary concern, then the Redmi Note 7 Pro might be a more affordable option that offers a seamless gaming experience.
