Samsung A70 Specs & Review

Sporting a futuristic design with curved edges, Samsung Galaxy A70 has a glossy finish at the back that resembles the A50 and A30. The body of the phone is made entirely of plastic, hence the back cover is a fingerprint and scratch magnet. At first glance, the A30 has very minimal bezels that are barely noticeable. It features the same Infinity-U waterdrop notch and its chin is much slimmer than the preceding models in A series. Despite being tall and large, Samsung is wise in integrating ergonomic design into the device to make it comfortable to hold. Looking at the bottom, a single loudspeaker, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a USB Type-C Port are present.

The smartphone boasts a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED panel with a screen resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels, 20:9 aspect ratio and 393 ppi density, protected by a Corning Gorilla Glass 3. With its Super AMOLED display, the screen displays vibrant colours both indoors and outdoors. As per usual, Samsung has display settings for you to configure the colour calibration and brightness level.

Powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 675 processor, the Samsung Galaxy A70 runs all sorts of apps, tabs, and games very smoothly, including PUBG and Asphalt 9. Multitasking won’t cause any lag or stutter on the phone. In addition, the Galaxy A70 is fitted with 6 or 8GB RAM, which is 25% faster in task performance than the A50. But it lags behind the A50 in graphic performance by 10%, which is not really significant for everyday usage. As for its internal memory, the phone has 128GB of storage that can be expanded up to 512GB with a microSD card. The phone operates on Android 9.0 Pie with One UI 1.1, both of which can receive updates from time to time. As of April 2020, the Galaxy A70 has started receiving updates for Android 10 and One UI 2.0. Having limited bloatware gives the phone an edge too. Users can uninstall most preloaded apps to maximise the storage.

In the A70’s triple-camera department, there’s a 32MP f/1.7 main camera, an 8MP f/2.2 120-degree wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor for bokeh effects. Using the main camera, daylight shots are pretty excellent, as they exhibit clear details and natural colour - as with other Samsung smartphones. Even without HDR, the photos are presented in great contrast and saturation. On the other hand, the ultra-wide lens produces heavily distorted images, but it’s understandable as the camera tries to fit everything in one frame. The camera’s Live Focus feature helps to produce portrait shots with a defocused background.

Video Recording & Selfie Camera

As with the A30 and A50, this smartphone doesn’t perform very well in terms of capturing images in low-light conditions as it lacks the ability to reduce noise and focus on detail. When shooting videos, the A70 can deliver 4K resolution video recording at 30fps and Full HD capture at up to 60fps. When the ultra-wide lens is used for video recording, the footage can only be captured at Full HD at 30fps. On the front, its 32MP f/2.0 selfie camera captures great photos with enhanced details under natural lighting - selfie lovers rejoice!

Battery Life

The Galaxy A70 packs a massive 4500mAh battery, similar to the Galaxy A50, but with an upgraded 25W fast charging support. It takes only half an hour for the phone to refill its battery juice from 0% to 42%. With normal usage, the smartphone can easily last the entire day with a few extra hours to spare. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see some remaining battery juice in the phone after being left on idle mode for 2 days.

Fingerprint Sensor

You can unlock the Galaxy A70 with its in-display fingerprint sensor. An alternative to the fingerprint sensor is the Face Unlock feature which is just as fast but not as secure as fingerprint unlock.

In a nutshell, the Samsung Galaxy A70 is a strong contender among all mid-range phones. For a phone that possesses lots of features seen in flagship phones, its affordability wins it all. Considering that the A70 shares lots of similarities with the A50, you can also save a few bucks by getting the latter. If you would like more dazzling photography, then the Google Pixel 3a might be a better option in a similar price range.
