Vivo S1 Review

  • Sleek design
  • Excellent battery life
  • Up-to-par performance

  • Average cameras
  • Unnecessary preloaded apps
  • No USB Type-C port

Display & Design

At first glance, the Vivo S1 has a stylish and glossy appearance thanks to its almost bezel-less screen with a barely noticeable teardrop notch at the top. Sporting a 6.38-inch Super AMOLED panel with a clear resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels, the smartphone has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, making the device look quite tall - apt for watching videos and playing games. The high-resolution screen delivers vivid images and still manages to appear fine even in direct sunlight. Bonus: dark mode is included in the display setting, a feature highly coveted by many. Instead of the famous Gorilla Glass, it is covered by the Schott Xensation 3D glass which has proven to be highly resistant to breakage and scratches.

Powered by the MediaTek Helio P65 SoC octa-core processor, you can hardly notice any lag or glitch when doing essential tasks on the Vivo S1. With this octa-core processor, launching and running apps is smooth and fast. In addition, the Vivo S1 has 6GB RAM that can support multiple apps running in the background. The phone also operates on Android 9 Pie with Funtouch OS 9, which is capable of receiving new updates. The only thing that’s slightly different is that the access to shortcut keys will require swiping up from the bottom, which may take some time to get accustomed to.

Camera Setup

In Vivo S1’s AI triple camera setup, there’s a 16 MP rear camera with f/1.78 aperture that is equipped with a Sony IMX499 sensor, an 8 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera with 120-degree field of view, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor. The selfie camera has a 32 MP lens with f/2.0 aperture. Moving on to the smartphone’s camera app, it comes packed with lots of features and modes: HDR, AR Stickers, AI Filter, AI Portrait Framing, AI Face Beauty, Time-Lapse Photography, and many more. That being said, many reviewers have expressed the quality of Vivo S1’s selfie camera isn’t quite up to par when compared to many other mid-tier smartphones.

Battery Life

Packing a whopping 4500 mAh battery, this phone has a sufficiently large battery capacity that is going to support you for the whole day on a single charge. Even after 12 hours of performing this combination of activities: social media, music, image capturing, the Vivo S1 still has sufficient battery juice for the next day. Since it’s bundled with a fast charge connector, it’s apparent that the Vivo S1 can support fast-charging. Of all the features combined, its battery performance seems to be the key trait that makes the S1 stand out among all Vivo mid-tier models.

Miscellaneous Features

Much the same as various smartphones on the market today, Vivo S1 boasts a built-in fingerprint scanner that comes under the display. The fingerprint scanner allows you to sign into a security-protected app (eg. banking or e-wallet app) easily without entering your username and password.

An alternative to the fingerprint sensor is the facial recognition technology in the phone. Users are given the option to use both biometric modes simultaneously to hasten the unlocking speed. As for the SIM card slot, the Vivo S1 can store three cards - two nano SIMs and one microSD card. While it’s becoming a trend for smartphone manufacturers to ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack, it is still present in Vivo S1, thankfully.

Mobile gaming enthusiasts may appreciate the Ultra Game Mode feature that enhances the gaming experience. Several settings can be configured to ensure a seamless gaming experience, including disabling notification while gaming, enabling game picture-in-picture, optimising game performance and others.

Overall, if you would like to use an affordable mid-range phone that has an excellent battery and a great display while allowing you to do moderate gaming, the Vivo S1 is the one to go for. It has all the cool features found in flagship phones today and is capable of delivering smooth performance even when performing multiple tasks at the same time.
