Xiaomi Mi 4 – China's sole competitor against Apple's iPhone

Xiaomi Mi 4 is a next generation Smartphone developed by Chinese software & technology firm Xiaomi Technology Co Ltd as a 4th generation model from its ever successful MIUI series of smartphones. It was unveiled at the annual product launch ceremony held by the company in Beijing on 22nd July 2014. Xiaomi mi4 is hailed as the company's latest flagship Smartphone in the market as a counter to Apple's iOS based iphone 6. Other models in the series include Mi-1, Mi-2 and Mi-3; the company has sold over 56.36 million smartphones till July 2014 since its inception in 2010.

MIUI Platform

MIUI Platform is an operating system & user interface developed by Xiaomi Technology Co Ltd which has been extensively used in Mi series. It has been developed using Android open source operating system which is used as an interface for Xiaomi smartphones, tablets, Smart TV's etc. The MIUI platform is similar to that of Apple's iOS interface & Samsung's Touch Wiz interface. Due to China's restrictive policies, Xiaomi smartphones do not have Google Play services installed on them; however for models marketed outside China, MIUI has an inbuilt array of Google apps including Google Maps, G mail, Google Play etc.

Xiaomi Mi 4 features

Xiaomi Mi 4 has been developed as a continuation of Xiaomi's very successful line of smartphones – Mi series. It has a 5.0 inches IPS LCD based touch screen display with a screen resolution of 1920x1080 pixels (pixel density – 441ppi).

It also features a 5.0 MIUI multi touch interface. Mi 4 has a 3MB RAM and has a 16 or 64GB internal SD memory configuration. It operates on a 2.5GHz, quad core Krait 400 MSM8974AC Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor chip; it also has an Adreno 220 GPU along with A-GPS support. It has been provided with a non removable 3080mAh Lithium ion battery which has a stand by time of 280 hours on a 3G connection.

Xiaomi Mi 4 has a 13MP, dual LED Flash primary camera with a picture resolution of 4128 x 3096 pixels; it also has autofocus features, face or smile detection, touch focus and HDR video recording at 2160 or 1080p at 30 frames per second or 720p at 120 frames per second. Mi 4 also features an 8MP secondary or front camera which can record in 1080p at 30 frames per second.

Xiaomi Mi 4 has the latest Android platform as its user interface – Android OS 4.4.3 Kitkat and features a Java MIDP emulator, FM Radio, HTML 5 based web browser etc. It has a 5.48 inch frame size and weighs over 149g; it has also been provided with a standard 3.5mm Audio output jack, Loudspeaker, Infrared port, A2DP Bluetooth 4.0 and micro USB 2.0 port etc.

Mi 4 is available in Black & White colors and supports a wide array of networks including GRPS, WLAN and Wi-Fi Hotspot etc.

Xiaomi Mi 4 has been fitted with latest sensor technologies including accelerometer, gyro meter, barometer, compass and proximity sensors.

Pros & Cons

Xiaomi Mi 4 has a very fast battery charging time of 60% in 30 minutes due to its Quick Charge 2.0 feature. It also has Active Noise Cancellation for its Mic input; MIUI 5 supports over 24 different languages & is recognized by about 650 million users all over the world. It exhibits an excellent design & craftsmanship with its beautifully polished stainless steel frame; latest 13MP IMX 214 Sony Camera with a 0.3 second fast focus and real time HDR & 4K video recording. However, major drawbacks include an absence of external SD memory card slots, lack of 4G connectivity and severe product import complications.

Popularity in Singapore

Xiaomi operates in the Singapore through a vast network of dealerships owned by Xiaomi Singapore. Major dealerships include those located in Suntec City, Clark Quay Central, Bishan and more.

Xiaomi Mi 4 Competitors

Xiaomi Mi 4 is set to go head to head with leading next generation Smartphone models including OnePlus One, Samsung Galaxy S5, LG G3, Google Nexus 5, Huwei Honor 6, Apple iphone 6 etc. It should be noted that Samsung Galaxy S5 is water resistant while Google Nexus has an HDMI connector for TV integration.
