What You Should Know Before Buying an SSD

As the entire computing world begins to adopt SSD, this should be the best time for you to get one. Thanks to its several advantages, SSD really makes you feel that it is a major upgrade which shows tangible results. Moreover, it is this dramatic performance that encourages many to use SSD for their computers. While HDD is cheaper than SSD, SSD actually offers true value for money if you can get the right one. Before buying a SSD, these are some things that you should consider so that you can make the best decision.

Form Factor

When it comes to getting an SSD, you should get the one that you can mount easily in your system. You can get the best SSD but it will be useless when you cannot mount it due to incompatibility. Thankfully, SSDs are mostly standardized and you will have no problem with them. As long as you pay attention, you can avoid the problem of incompatibility. As of now, most SSDs are available in their 2.5-inch form factor. This size is actually ideal for laptops. However, you should not use this size for your desktop computer because it accepts 3.5-inch form factor. Yet, you can remedy such problem by using a special adapter that converts the 3.5-inch bay drive to accept 2.5-inch form factor.

Performance

SSDs do offer an obvious advantage over the traditional hard disk drive when it comes to performance. It is the reason why people prefer to get SSD for their computers. Unlike HDD, SSD uses the same flash technology like the one you see on flash drives. In fact, even the worst SSD is still better than HDD.

Despite this, not all SDDs are created equally. When you compare several SSDs with similar storage capacity, you need to pay attention to their sequential read and sequential write speed. Even though these SSDs have the same storage capacity, all of them actually have different sequential read and write speed. In other words, you need to pay attention to sequential read and write speed as well.

Storage Capacity

It is important to note that both HDD and SSD operate differently. While HDD can overwrite existing data, SSD is unable to do the same thing. Instead, SSD requires an entire block of data to be erased firstly before you can write new data. Basically, your SSD will need empty space in order to function properly. Otherwise, your SSD becomes less efficient due to insufficient empty space. If you have 250GB, you can only use up to 200GB effectively. Storage capacity is one thing that you should consider before you buy an SSD.

Reliability

Since it does not contain moving parts, SSD does not encounter the problem of mechanical failure. However, it is more vulnerable to a power failure which can result in data corruption or total device failure. It is expected that the lifespan of SSD is between 5 and 7 years. Each passing year will increase the chance of drive failure. This is another thing that you should keep in mind if you want an SSD.
