Fans of Hong Kong television station TVB undoubtedly remember the Five Tigers. Andy Lau, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Felix Wong, Miu Kiu Wai, and Ken Tong were famously packaged as a group during TVB's mid-eighties heyday. The five reunited for the 1991 cop thriller The Tigers, directed by Eric Tsang, and have occasionally worked together since. Nostalgia beckons once more, as Andy Lau and his Focus Films production company have reunited four of the Five Tigers for the gangster melodrama Brothers. Tony Leung couldn't make the party, but the filmmakers bring in Eason Chan (Hooked on You), Wang Zhi Wen (Together), Gordon Lam (Infernal Affairs), and Elaine Kam (Tempting Heart). Overseeing the promising cast is Derek Chiu (The Log), returning to the director's chair for the first time since 2004's Love Trilogy. Tensions rise in the triad underworld when triad leader Tin Tam (Wang Zhi Wen) falls victim to an assassination attempt. His son, triad head Yiu Tam (Miu Kiu Wai), is now in charge, and must secure the safety of the triad from interlopers Uncle Nine (Henry Fong) and Kui (Ken Tong). Meanwhile, cop Inspector Lau (Andy Lau) angles to bring Yiu down. Amidst this, Yiu's innocent brother, Shun Tam (Eason Chan) returns from America to visit his ailing father, only to find himself quickly drawn into the escalating violence of the triad underworld. Yiu acts to keep his brother safe, with trusted enforcer Ghostie (Felix Wong) acting as Shun's bodyguard. But Yiu may not be entirely on the level. Years ago, a fortune teller told Tin Tam that one of his sons would someday kill the other. To prevent that tragedy, Tin separated the two, but now that Shun and Yiu are back together, and with violence and betrayal surrounding them, it may only be a matter of time before the prophecy comes true.

Deltamac Shuttle Of Hearts AKA: Substitute Teacher (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 9.70
After Zhang Yimou's classic Not One Less comes another film on China's rural education. Though less sentimental than Zhang's well-known title, Chinese Sixth Generation director Ling Yiyun's Substitute Teacher (a.k.a. Shuttle of Hearts) presents a more subtle piece which is just as touching. Low literacy rate in rural areas has always been a problem in China. A lot of educators have devoted their careers to teaching to children in remote villages, hoping that they will not suffer from poverty one day. Our protagonist, Shanghainese girl Gu Xiaolin (Pang Xinyi), does not have such a vision in mind at first. She visits a remote village in Poyang to find her ex-boyfriend, the son of dedicated rural teacher Miss Liu who has put up with hardship for more than 30 years, working to enlighten underprivileged children. But she stopped teaching some time ago because her son passed away in an accident. The village head asks Gu to be a substitute teacher so that the very primitive village school can satisfy provincial requirements by having at least one teacher. Taking up teaching as a temporary job, Gu Xiaolin begins to understand her deceased boyfriend's sense of mission in working at this backward village...

S$ 9.70
After writing the script for the acclaimed Double Vision, Su Chao Bin furthers his skills in the genre with the tension-filled ghost film Silk, which was officially selected for the out of competition section at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. The film received 5 nominations at Taiwan's most prestigious Golden Horse Film Festival and won the Best Visual Effects award. Chang Chen, who has already proved his skills in art films such as Three Times, takes up the leading role as a capable but rather ill-tempered cop. His charismatic performance in Silk helps deliver an engaging story which mixes sci-fi, suspense, and horror into one intriguing piece. Dedicated cop Tung (Chang Chen) helps weird scientist Hashimoto (Yosuke Eguichi) uncover the secret of how human beings become ghosts after death. Hashimoto and his two assistants (Barbie Hsu and Wilson Chen) have done much research on the anti-gravity Menger Sponge with which they trap a ghost child. Called in for his exceptional vision, Tung sees in the ghost child the "silk" which mysteriously connects human beings and ghosts. Little does he know, participating in this experiment will place him and even his girlfriend (Karena Lam) at odds with great dangers from the unknown world...

There was once a young girl named May (Xu Jiao) who felt alienated from everyone around her. May is worried about her mother (Rene Liu) and father (Harlem Yu), whose marriage is on the rocks, and she yearns to return to the woods where her grandfather (Kenneth Tsang) lives. One day, May befriends a boy (Eric Lin) as lonely as she is. When reality catches up, they run away to a beautiful world that belongs only to them. Both imaginatively escapist and heartbreakingly realistic, their journey speaks to kids and adults alike with the pain of solitude, the sorrow of loss, and the warmth of hope. Based on Jimmy Liao's illustrated book, the fanciful coming-of-age film Starry Starry Night paints in vivid strokes the fears and fantasies of childhood. Winds of September director Tom Lin expands on the original story, while staying true to the sentiments and visuals of the book with splendid CG animation that brings alive Liao's imaginative world. As the teen leads, CJ7's Josie Xu Jiao and newcomer Eric Lin Hui Min take us back to a tender age when life is fragile yet full of wonder. Just like the heroine, audiences won't easily forget that summer back when, and its brightest, loneliest Starry Starry Night.

Deltamac Missing (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 9.70
Returning with his first full-length film since 2005's Seven Swords, Hong Kong Cinema master Tsui Hark writes, produces, and directs the genre-arching supernatural drama Missing. Popular actress Angelica Lee (The Eye) sees ghosts again in this eerie effort which offers its share of scares, but is by no means a horror film in the traditional sense. Co-starring up-and-coming actress Isabella Leong (Isabella), Guo Xiaodong from An Empress and the Warriors, and arthouse favorite Chang Chen (Red Cliff), Missing combines supernatural, psychodrama, and romance elements in a less than predictable manner to tell an uncommon story of life, love, and death. The film also features beautiful underwater photography, and supporting performances from Tony Leung Ka Fai and Taiwan rock singer A-yue Chang. A scuba diving trip turns into a nightmare when psychiatrist Gao Jing (Angelica Lee) and her boyfriend Guo Dong (Guo Xiaodong) meet tragedy at sea. Suffering from memory loss after the incident, Gao Jing can't remember what exactly happened in the ocean that day, and all that is recovered of Guo Dong is a headless corpse. Upset that Gao Jing is going ahead with the funeral, Guo Dong's sister Xiao Kai (Isabella Leong) angrily sets out to find her brother's head. Gao Jing looks for closure through therapy but only ends up with more questions and heartache. When her patient Simon (Chang Chen) claims that he can see Guo Dong's ghost, Gao Jing seeks his guidance to open her eyes and mind to the other side. Soon she's seeing visitors of all sorts, but no Guo Dong. At this time, a strangely eerie Xiao Kai suddenly returns to Hong Kong with her brother's head. But is it really Guo Dong's head that Xiao Kai has brought back?

After leaving a lasting impression with his supporting role in the live-action Hollywood adaptation of Speed Racer, Korean superstar Rain takes his first true international starring vehicle in the 2009 action thriller Ninja Assassin. To transform himself into the title character convincingly, he actually took on a tough training regime to equip himself with the physical skills required of the role. In the movie he adeptly wields a multitude of ninja weapons and employs various schools of martial arts techniques. After playing this renegade ninja who vows vengeance on the secret organization that raised and trained him as an assassin, the hugely popular and charismatic K-pop titan has become a bona fide action movie star! Produced by the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix trilogy) and directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), Ninja Assassin offers stunning visuals and imaginative action scenes. The blood-spurting blockbuster also boasts a nice package of co-stars, including Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean series), '80s Japanese action icon Kosugi Sho, British actor Ben Miles, and Asian actors Rick Yune (The Fast and the Furious) and Randall Duk Kim (Dragonball Evolution).

S.H.E's Ella Chen (New Perfect Two) joins hands with screen heartthrob Mike He (Love Keeps Going) in Bad Girls! Ella plays spunky high-school girl A-Dan, who, along with her best friends Pei Pei ("otaku's goddess" Da Yuan) and Xiao Mi (Beatrice Fang), forms the notoriously prone-to-violence trio known as the "Bad Girls". She takes it upon herself to deal out justice, protect other girls from bullies, and, most importantly, punish the insufferable boys. This summer, young popular idol Justin (Mike He) comes to A-Dan's school to shoot his latest romantic movie, and that makes the girls in town crazy. But it is the nonchalant A-Dan who, by pure chance of fate, accidentally crashes into the filming lot, and is assigned the female lead role opposite the arrogant Justin! There is a problem - she has no prior romantic experience at all... Co-starring Chris Wang (The Fierce Wife), Jack Kao, and award-winning child actor Bi Xiao Hai (The Fourth Portrait), the first dramatic feature from female director Seven Weng introduces a colorful variant of youth romantic comedy combined with action, musical, and nostalgic elements to crowd-pleasing effect.

Revolving around an armed task force dedicated to defending libraries and books in a dystopian near-future Japan in which the media censorship authority has become an oppressive organization, Arikawa Hiro's light novel series Library Wars was turned into a live-action blockbuster in 2013 starring V6's Okada Junichi and Eikura Nana. The film followed Kasahara Iku (Eikura Nana), a new recruit of the Library Defense Force, as she navigated a dangerous new world under the tutelage of her stern supervisor Dojo Atsushi (Okada Junichi). The original cast and crew return in 2015 for the film sequel Library Wars: The Last Mission, again directed by Sato Shinsuke. Set 18 months after the first film, The Last Mission sees the Library Defense Force take on their biggest battle when a mission to safeguard a book exhibition turns out to be a trap laid by the government-armed Media Betterment Committee to wipe out the defense force. Besides Okada and Eikura, Fukushi Sota, Kuriyama Chiaki, Tanaka Kei, Hashimoto Jun and Nishida Naomi, as well as Matsuzaka Tori, Nakamura Aoi and Tsuchiya Tao who appeared in the 2015 television special Library Wars: Book of Memories, also reprise their roles.

A convenience store holdup spirals rapidly into an unpredictable roller coaster of violence and vulgarity in Fire Lee's wild and eclectic crime thriller Robbery. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Derek Tsang, J.Arie, Lam Suet, Stanley Fung, Philip Keung. Eric Kwok, Ken Lo, Edward Ma and Anita Chui, the film applies dark humor, colorful visuals and sly social commentary to a shockingly absurd night of crimes and confrontations that holds more meaning than meets the eye. Over thirty years old and with nothing to show for it, Ping (Derek Tsang) shares a microscopic apartment with his loud family and simply can't catch a break. On a whim, he begins working at a convenience store run by an unpleasant manager (Lam Suet) and forges a quick bond with co-worker Mabel (J. Arie). In the wee hours, an old man (Stanley Fung) walks into the store to buy bread, but he is treated rudely by the manager. In response, the old man stabs the manager in the neck with a pair of scissors and takes everyone in the store hostage including a bathroom-seeking fugitive (Philip Keung) who soon turns out to be even more dangerous and unhinged. The night only gets longer with the arrival of more unexpected visitors, from a group of police officers to a young boy redeeming a toy to a suicide bomber. With guns blazing and blood shedding left and right, will anyone be able to walk out of the store alive the next morning?

S$ 40.40
After making two critically acclaimed short films, animation director Shinkai Makoto makes his first feature-length film with the ambitious fantasy romance The Place Promised in Our Early Days. The sci-fi espionage romance takes place in an alternate reality in which Japan has been split into two - one occupied by the United States and one occupied by the Soviet Union - and it follows three childhood friends who become part of a major civil war between the two Japans. Even with his ambitious premise, Shinkai continues to explore some of his favorite themes in Place, such as the longing for those fleeting moments in our youth. Hiroki, Takuya, and Sayuri are teenagers living in Aomori, located at the northern edge of the formerly US-occupied Southern Japan. Everyday, they look north at the Soviet-occupied Northern Japan and the mysterious Hokkaido Tower. One day, Hiroki and Takuya find a crashed drone plane, and they start to restore it with hopes of flying it to Hokkaido Tower with Sayuri. However, Sayuri suddenly disappears long before the plane is done. Three years later, Hiroki and Takuya - still haunted by Sayuri's disappearance - have parted ways, with one continuing high school in Tokyo and the other working as a physicist in a project funded by the American government. When Takuya gets involved with an underground group aiming at the reunification of Japan, he discovers that Sayuri is now taking part in a research involving the Hokkaido Tower in the north...

Deltamac 5 Centimeters Per Second (2007) (Blu-ray) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 28.50
Since the release of his award-winning short Voices From a Distant Star in 2002, visionary animator Shinkai Makoto has been earmarked as the future of Japanese animation, the next Miyazaki. Though these are no easy expectations to live up to, Shinkai has shown that the hype is well deserved with his 2004 follow-up The Place Promised Our Early Days and now 5 Centimeters Per Second, a.k.a. a chain of short stories about their distance. The title refers to the speed at which cherry blossoms fall to the ground, a fitting image of the film's delicate, lyrical splendor. 5 Centimeters Per Second continues with the soft, dreamy aesthetic and bittersweet adolescent sentiments of Shinkai's previous works, but this time he moves away from the sci-fi themes, reveling in the lingering beauty of the everyday. Split into three episodes, 5 Centimenters Per Second follows the tender romance and coming-of-age of Takaki and Akari. They first meet as fourth-graders, lonely souls who love the same books and become the best of friends. When Takaki moves far away, it marks the end of his childhood and an unforgettable friendship. In his high school years, he becomes the object of affection for a young surfer girl named Kanae. As adults, Takaki and Akari watch the cherry blossoms fall, alone in their memories. 5 Centimeters Per Second does not tell so much a story, but a feeling, a portrait of life and longing captured by a distant train, a melting snowflake, a falling blossom.
