Point and Click

The computer mouse is a little device which we use to control the pointer in a computer, typically used over a user interface of an operating system such as Microsoft Windows or Apple's Mac OS.

The first computer mouse was invented in the 1960s by Douglas Englebart with lead engineer Bill English. The mouse they invented used wheels which would roll on surfaces to control the computer pointer on screen. Its design consist of a single square block of wood with rounded sides and a switch on one corner, with the wire coming out of the rear – this design aspect would earn the computer mouse the mouse name because of the resemblance to the common mouse's tail.

One of the first computers ever designed for personal use was the Xerox Alto which came with a computer mouse, and as the time went on the computer mouse design would evolve and spawn many different variations over time.

Difference between Optical and Laser-Sensor Mouse

Past the era of trackball mice, there are predominantly two different types of mice today: Optical and laser mouse. The two different mice are actually rather similar, but they use two different types of illumination for the sensor to detect the surface the mouse is on, LED (optical) and laser. This used to be an issue depending on what type of surface the mouse is on, but today's technology has improved much that both mice work well on all surfaces.

Types of Computer Mouse

The rise of computer technology and entertainment has given birth to a lot of different types of computer mice, although easily divided into two different categories: the common computer mouse and the gaming mouse. Both types of computer mouse today come in both wired and wireless forms (wireless USB dongle or Bluetooth).

Common Computer Mouse

The common computer mouse is the normal mouse that you see most people using on their computers and laptops. These mice typically feature three distinct buttons: the left click, scroll wheel which doubles as a middle click, and the right click. These computer mice are usually very affordable, starting at very low prices – even bundled with computers and laptops. There are also premium computer mice which have more comfortable grips, features such as additional buttons, and also higher quality sensor for a more consistent experience.

Gaming Computer Mouse

A gaming computer mouse shares all the same basics and foundation of a common computer mouse, but is usually built to be more durable and long lasting because of its high performance uses. Gaming mouse also have sensors which are tunable, enabling higher or lower sensitivity. An abundance of buttons on gaming mice is also common as it can be reprogrammed to perform other actions and keys. Some of these mice even come with lights.

A computer mouse is a rather important peripheral today as it makes operating and navigating a computer a much smoother and easier experience.
