Cowboy Song: The Authorised Biography of Philip Lynott
S$ 46.80
Goguru

The first biography to be written with the cooperation of the Lynott Estate, Cowboy Song is the definitive authorised account of the extraordinary life and career of Thin Lizzy guiding spirit, Philip Lynott. Leading music writer Graeme Thompson explores the fascinating contradictions between Lynott's unbridled rock star excesses and the shy, sensitive 'orphan' raised in working class Dublin. The mixed-race child of a Catholic teenager and a Guyanese stowaway, Lynott rose above daunting obstacles and wounding abandonments to become Ireland's first rock star. Cowboy Song examines his key musical alliances as well as the unique blend of cultural influences which informed Lynott's writing, connecting Ireland's rich reserves of music, myth and poetry to hard rock, progressive folk, punk, soul and New Wave. Published on the thirtieth anniversary of Lynott's death in January 1986, Thompson draws on scores of exclusive interviews with family, friends, band mates and collaborators. Cowboy Song is both the ultimate depiction of a multi-faceted rock icon, and an intimate portrait of a much-loved father, son and husband.

James Anthony Froude: An Intellectual Biography of a Victorian Prophet
S$ 61.40
Goguru

James Anthony Froude remains one of the most commonly referenced and frequently cited of Victorian public intellectuals. Known to intellectual historians as the author of a monumental History of England in the sixteenth century and as a key exponent of Victorian religious doubt, he is also frequently referenced as the author of a series of scandalously provocative novels and of a hugely controversial biography of Thomas Carlyle. Historians of the BritishEmpire and of Ireland have frequently been compelled to address his sometimes outrageous (but often representative) historical writings. Scholars of mid-Victorian politics have no less often turned to Froude as a typical representative of Victorian fears of democracy, while more recently students of politicalthought have identified him as an early representative of a new form of Commonwealth civic republicanism. Yet for all that Froude remains a strangely marginalised, fragmented, and neglected figure. Ciaran Brady now addresses this remarkable gap. Based on a thorough critical examination of all of Froude's published works - many of which have been discovered and identified here for the first time - and supplemented by intensive research into Froude's private and widely scattered manuscript materials, he offers the first sustained study of Froude's life and thought. Against the common assumption thatFroude's life can be divided along simple lines - the sometime enfant terrible who aged into a respectable man of letters - he argues that there was a deeper coherence underlying everything he wrote from the scandalous productions of the 1840s to the authoritative university lectures of the 1890s. In addition to providing a study of a major but neglected nineteenth century intellectual, Brady offers a critical analysis of the impulses, the aspirations, and the unquestioned assumptions underlying the Romantic project of personal renovation, and an alternative view of that unique phenomenon known as 'the Victorian sage'.

Principles of Social Change
S$ 62.30
Goguru

The efforts of social activists and mental health professionals to institute population-level social change, such as reducing poverty, building better schools, and establishing more effective substance abuse programs, often fail. They tend to focus on individuals and not real-life community conditions; they fail to take into account stakeholders efforts to maintain the status quo; and they do not develop concrete strategies to build coalitions to alter policies. These unsuccessful attempts at change can leave citizens, community groups, and healthcare professionals feeling dispirited and overwhelmed. Principles of Social Change is written for those who are impassioned and driven by social justice issues in their communities and seek practical solutions. Leonard A. Jason, a leading community psychologist, demonstrates how social change can be accomplished and fostered by observing five key principles: (1) determine the nature of the change desired, (2) identify who holds the power, (3) create coalitions, (4) be patient but persistent, and (5) measure your success. Describing these principles through first-hand accounts of the experiences of people who have worked on a range of social justice issues, Jason gives unique insight and presents a comprehensive approach toward the development of social and community interventions, such as protecting the well-being of children, providing affordable housing, combating abuses of power, and cleaning up the environment. Principles of Social Change provides answers about what citizens and community action groups can do in collaboration with healthcare professionals to address these seemingly intractable problems. It is essential reading for community psychologists, social activists, policy makers, and students and trainees in these fields.

Salmon P. Chase: A Biography
S$ 76.60
Goguru

Salmon P. Chase was one of the preeminent men of 19th-century America. A majestic figure, tall and stately, Chase was a leader in the fight to end slavery, a brilliant administrator who as Lincolns Secretary of the Treasury provided crucial funding for a vastly expensive war, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court during the turmoil of Reconstruction, and the presiding officer of the impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson. Yet he was also a complex figure. As John Niven reveals in this magisterial biography, Chase was a paradoxical blend of idealism and ambition. If he stood for the highest moral purposes--the freedom and equality of all mankind--these lofty ideas failed to mask a thirst for power so deeply ingrained in his character that it drove away many who shared his principles, but mistrusted his motives. Niven provides a vivid description of Chases early years--his childhood in New Hampshire (where his fathers failed business venture and early death left the family all but destitute) and in Ohio (where he was sent to live with his uncle Philander, an Episcopal bishop), his education at Dartmouth, and his early law career in Cincinnati. Niven shows how the plight of the slaves stirred this reticent young lawyer, and how Chase gradually moved to the forefront of the antislavery movement. At the same time, we see how he used his growing prominence in the antislavery movement to forward his political ambitions. Niven illuminates Chases long tenure as a public man. Twice elected United States Senator, twice chosen governor of Ohio (then the third most populous state in the Union), Chase organized the widespread but diffuse anti-slavery movement into a workable political organization, the Free Soil party (whose slogan Free Soil, Free Labor, Freemen Chase coined himself). We read of Chases work in Lincolns war cabinet and his tenure as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and we also follow his many political maneuvers, his attempts to undercut rivals, and his poorly run campaigns for presidential nominations. Niven also provides an intimate portrait of Chases family life--his loss of three wives and four of his six children, and the unfortunate marriage of his beautiful daughter Kate to a rich but dissolute man--and a vivid picture of life at mid-century. What emerges is a portrait of a tragic figure, whose high qualities of heart and mind and whose many achievements were ultimately tarnished by an often unseemly quest for power. It is a striking look at an eminent statesman as well as a revealing glimpse into political life in 19th-century America, all set against a background of the anti-slavery movement, the Civil War, and the turmoil of Reconstruction.

Design and Conduct of Meaningful Experiments Involving Human Participants: 25 Scientific Principles
S$ 81.90
Goguru

Designing and conducting experiments involving human participants requires a skillset different from that needed for statistically analyzing the resulting data. The Design and Conduct of Meaningful Experiments Involving Human Participants combines an introduction to scientific culture and ethical mores with specific experimental design and procedural content. Author R. Barker Bausell assumes no statistical background on the part of the reader, resulting in a highly accessible text. Clear instructions are provided on topics ranging from the selection of a societally important outcome variable to potentially efficacious interventions to the conduct of the experiment itself. Early chapters introduce the concept of experimental design in an intuitive manner involving both hypothetical and real-life examples of how people make causal inferences. The fundamentals of formal experimentation, randomization, and the use of control groups are introduced in the same manner, followed by the presentation and explanation of common (and later, more advanced) designs. Replete with synopses of examples from the journal literature and supplemented by 25 experimental principles, this book is designed to serve as an interdisciplinary supplementary text for research-methods courses in the educational, psychological, behavioral, social, and health sciences. It also serves as an excellent primary text for methods seminar courses.

Thinking About Nuclear Weapons: Principles, Problems, Prospects
S$ 88.50
Goguru

The book reflects the author's experience across more than forty years in assessing and forming policy about nuclear weapons, mostly at senior levels close to the centre both of British governmental decision-making and of NATO's development of plans and deployments, with much interaction also with comparable levels of United States activity in the Pentagon and the State department. Part I of the book seeks to distill, from this exceptional background of practicalexperience, basic conceptual ways of understanding the revolution brought about by nuclear weapons. It also surveys NATO's progressive development of thinking about nuclear deterrence, and then discusses the deep moral dilemmas posed - for all possible standpoints - by the existence of such weapons. Part II considers the risks and costs of nuclear-weapon possession, including proliferation dangers, and looks at both successful and unsuccessful ideas about how to manage them. Part III illustrates specific issues by reviewing the history and current policies of one long-established possessor, the United Kingdom, and two more recent ones, India and Pakistan. Part IV turns to the future, examines the goal of eventually abolishing all nuclear armouries, and then discusses the practicalagenda, short of such a goal, which governments can usefully tackle in reducing the risks of proliferation and other dangers while not surrendering prematurely the war-prevention benefits which nuclear weapons have brought since 1945. This book is a project of the Oxford Leverhulme Programme on the Changing Character of War.

Theoretical Ecology: Principles and Applications
S$ 102.70
Goguru

Robert May's seminal book has played a central role in the development of ecological science. Originally published in 1976, this influential text has overseen the transition of ecology from an observational and descriptive subject to one with a solid conceptual core. Indeed, it is a testament to its influence that a great deal of the novel material presented in the earlier editions has now been incorporated into standard undergraduate textbooks. It is now a quarterof a century since the publication of the second edition, and a thorough revision is timely. Theoretical Ecology provides a succinct, up-to-date overview of the field set in the context of applications, thereby bridging the traditional division of theory and practice. It describes the recent advances in our understanding of how interacting populations of plants and animals change over time and space, in response to natural or human-created disturbance. In an integrated way, initial chapters give an account of the basic principles governing the structure, function, and temporal andspatial dynamics of populations and communities of plants and animals. Later chapters outline applications of these ideas to practical issues including fisheries, infectious diseases, tomorrow's food supplies, climate change, and conservation biology. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on questionswhich as yet remain unanswered. The editors have invited the top scientists in the field to collaborate with the next generation of theoretical ecologists. The result is an accessible, advanced textbook suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate level students as well as researchers in the fields of ecology, mathematical biology, environment and resources management. It will also be of interest to the general reader seeking a better understanding of a range of global environmental problems.

Principles of Optimal Design
S$ 104.90
Goguru

Principles of Optimal Design puts the concept of optimal design on a rigorous foundation and demonstrates the intimate relationship between the mathematical model that describes a design and the solution methods that optimize it. Since the first edition was published, computers have become ever more powerful, design engineers are tackling more complex systems, and the term optimization is now routinely used to denote a design process with increased speed and quality. This second edition takes account of these developments and brings the original text thoroughly up to date. The book now includes a discussion of trust region and convex approximation algorithms. A new chapter focuses on how to construct optimal design models. Three new case studies illustrate the creation of optimization models. The final chapter on optimization practice has been expanded to include computation of derivatives, interpretation of algorithmic results, and selection of algorithms and software. Both students and practising engineers will find this book a valuable resource for design project work.

Computing Risk for Oil Prospects: Principles and Programs
S$ 129.80
Goguru

The petroleum industry is enduring difficult financial times because of the continuing depressed price of crude oil on the world market. This has caused major corporate restructuring and reductions in staff throughout the industry. Because oil exploration must now be done with fewer people under more difficult economic constraints, it is essential that the most effective and efficient procedures be used. Computing Risk for Oil Prospects describes how prospect risk assessment - predicting the distribution of financial gains or losses that may result from the drilling of an exploration well - can be done using objective procedures implemented on personal computers. The procedures include analyses of historical data, interpretation of geological and geophysical data, and financial calculations to yield a spectrum of the possible consequences of decisions. All aspects of petroleum risk assessment are covered, from evaluating regional resources, through delineating an individual prospect, to calculation of the financial consequences of alternative decisions and their possible results. The bottom lines are given both in terms of the probable volumes of oil that may be discovered and the expected monetary returns. Statistical procedures are linked with computer mapping and interpretation algorithms, which feed their results directly into routines for financial analysis. The programs in the included library of computer programs are tailored to fit seamlessly together, and are designed for ease and simplicity of operation. The two diskettes supplied are IBM compatible. Full information on loading is given in Appendix A - Software Installation. Risk I diskette contains data files and executables and Risk 2 diskette contains only executables. The authors contend that the explorationist who develops a prospect should be involved in every facet of its analysis, including risk and financial assessments. This book provides the tools necessary for these tasks.

Principles of Stable Isotope Distribution
S$ 139.30
Goguru

This book presents a quantitative treatment of the theory and natural variations of light stable isotopes. It discusses isotope distribution in the context of fractionation processes, thermodynamics, mass conservation, exchange kinetics, and diffusion theory, and includes more than 100 original equations. The theoretical principles are illustrated with natural examples that emphasize oxygen and hydrogen isotope variations in natural waters, terrestrial and extraterrestrial rocks, and hydrothermal systems. New data on meteoric precipitation, rivers, springs, formation fluids, and hydrothermal systems are included in relation to various natural phenomena. Essentially, this book seeks to reconnect the diverse phenomenological observations of isotope distribution to the quantitative theories of physical chemistry and the language of differential equations. It may serve as a textbook for advanced students, as a research reference, or as a quick source of information. The book is organized into five chapters, each followed by suggested quantitative problems and a short reference list. The three theoretical chapters progress from an elementary review of the physical chemistry of stable isotopes, to the thermodynamics of isotopic compounds, and finally to the calculation of isotope distribution in dynamic systems. The third and fifth chapters emphasize oxygen and hydrogen isotope variations in Earths hydrosphere and lithosphere, constituting the most important examples of the theoretical principles. Appendices provide data on atomic weights of light elements, physical constants, mathematical relationships, and isotopic fractionation factors.

The emphasis of the book is a working, systematic understanding of classical techniques in a modern context. Along the way, students are exposed to models from a variety of disciplines. It is hoped that this course will prepare students for further study of modern techniques and in-depth modeling in their own specific discipline.

Principles of Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy: Second Edition
S$ 221.30
Goguru

Electron tunnelling spectroscopy is a research tool which has strongly advanced understanding of superconductivity. With the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope, STM, by Nobelists G. Binnig and H. Rohrer, beautiful images of atoms, rings of atoms and of exotic states in high temperature superconductors have appeared. Some of the most famous images of any kind, at this date, are STM topographs. This book explains the physics and the instrumentation behindthe advances illustrated in the famous images, and summarizes the state of knowledge that has resulted. It presents the current state of the art of tunneling- and scanning tunneling spectroscopies of atoms, molecules and especially superconductors. The first edition of Principles of Electron Tunneling Spectroscopy has been a standard reference for active researchers for many years. This second edition fully embraces the advances represented by the scanning tunnelling microscope and, especially, scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. Stunning images of single atoms and spectral images of impurity states in high temperature superconductors will set this volume apart from its predecessor. The background and current status are providedfor applications of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy to single atoms and molecules, including determination of bonding energies and vibrational frequencies. The applications to high temperature superconductivity are carefully introduced and the current status is described. A new section covers theastounding advances in instrumentation, which now routinely provide atomic resolution, and, in addition, developments in imaging and image processing, such as Fourier Transform Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy.

Principles of Data Mining
S$ 222.90
Goguru

The growing interest in data mining is motivated by a common problem across disciplines: how does one store, access, model, and ultimately describe and understand very large data sets? Historically, different aspects of data mining have been addressed independently by different disciplines. This is the first truly interdisciplinary text on data mining, blending the contributions of information science, computer science, and statistics. The book consists of three sections. The first, foundations, provides a tutorial overview of the principles underlying data mining algorithms and their application. The presentation emphasizes intuition rather than rigor. The second section, data mining algorithms, shows how algorithms are constructed to solve specific problems in a principled manner. The algorithms covered include trees and rules for classification and regression, association rules, belief networks, classical statistical models, nonlinear models such as neural networks, and local "e;memory-based"e; models. The third section shows how all of the preceding analysis fits together when applied to real-world data mining problems. Topics include the role of metadata, how to handle missing data, and data preprocessing.

Diabetes: The Biography
S$ 10.90
Goguru

Diabetes is a disease with a fascinating history and one that has been growing dramatically with urbanization. According to the World Health Authority, it now affects 4.6% of adults over 20, reaching 30% in the over 35s in some populations. It is one of the most serious and widespread diseases today. But the general perception of diabetes is quite different. At the beginning of the 20th century, diabetes sufferers mostly tended to be middle-aged and overweight, and could live tolerably well with the disease for a couple of decades, but when it occasionally struck younger people, it could be fatal within a few months. The development of insulin in the early 1920s dramatically changed things for these younger patients. But that story of the success of modern medicine has tended to dominate public perception, so that diabetes is regarded as arelatively minor illness. Sadly, that is far from the case, and diabetes can produce complications affecting many different organs. Robert Tattersall, a leading authority on diabetes, describes the story of the disease from the ancient writings of Galen and Avicenna to the recognition of sugar in the urine of diabetics in the 18th century, the identification of pancreatic diabetes in 1889, the discovery of insulin in the early 20th century, the ensuing optimism, and the subsequent despair as the complexity of this now chronic illness among its increasing number of young patients became apparent. Yet new drugs are beingdeveloped, as well as new approaches to management that give hope for the future. Diabetes affects many of us directly or indirectly through friends and relatives. This book gives an authoritative and engaging account of the long history and changing perceptions of a disease that now dominates the concerns of health professionals in the developed world. Diabetes: the biography is part of the Oxford series, Biographies of Diseases, edited by William and Helen Bynum. In each individual volume an expert historian or clinician tells the story of a particular disease or condition throughout history - not only in terms of growing medical understanding of its nature and cure, but also shifting social and cultural attitudes, and changes in the meaning of the name of the disease itself.

Matthew McConaughey is a Hollywood star with an Oscar to his name and the world at his feet.Growing up in Texas, the youngest of three boys, he was known for his good looks and charm. His acting career began quietly with TV commercials, B movies and lowbudget independent films, which included the much respected coming of age drama Dazed and Confused. In 1996, his big break came as lawyer Jack Brigance in A Time to Kill, based on the best-selling legal thriller by John Grisham, and he was subsequently cast in such acclaimed films as Amistad, Contact, Edtv and U-571.However the new millennium brought an unfortunate change in his fortunes as he moved into risible romantic comedies. Movies such as The Wedding Planner, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, Failure To Launch, Fool's Gold and Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past were only moderately successful and failed to win over the critics; the critical acclaim that he garnered in the nineties as a serious actor was a thing of the past, and McConaughey desperately needed to reinvent himself. The Lincoln Lawyer, released in 2011, commenced McConaughey's revival and he returned to serious roles in such revered films as Bernie, Killer Joe, Magic Mike and Dallas Buyers Club, which won him a Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Lead Actor in 2014. He was also cast with Woody Harrelson in HBO's critically acclaimed series True Detective which won him rave reviews. Thinking Like A Designer: Principles and Tools for Effective Web Design
S$ 8.90
Goguru

NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR I have a confession to make: I call myself a designer, but I never went to design school, only worked in a web agency for a couple months, and learned what I know by reading blogs and following along tutorials. I think this is one of the reasons why I love writing and blogging: it gives me a chance to give back and in turn help aspiring designers just like I was helped myself. And I also blog because I want to show that although good design can often feel magical, the process itself isn't: it's just about mastering the basics, and a lot of hard work. If I can do it, I believe you probably can as well. So what you have here is a selection of the most interesting articles I've written over the past couple years. All I hope is that they will help make a long plane ride a little bit shorter, and just maybe give you some new perspectives on design. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK User Experience is a term you hear thrown around a whole lot lately. For some people it means the way a site looks and feels, for others it's all about a site's architecture, but for most of them it's just an empty buzzword that doesn't mean anything at all. User experience is all that and much more. It literally is what users think and feel while using your product. UX Is Everywhere If your site has a painless sign-up process, that's part of the user experience. If your site uses gorgeous photos, that's part of the user experience. If your site is unbearably slow, that's UX too. And if your site is perfect, but there's a bug in your code and you end up charging people twice as much for your product, well guess what, that's also part of their (very bad) user experience. So "e;user experience design"e; can include web design, photography, speed optimization, coding, to say nothing of copywriting, branding, security, interaction design, or information architecture. We're All User Experience Designers It logically follows that someone who calls himself a "e;user experience designers"e; should be involved in every one of those aspects. But instead, actual "e;user experience designers"e; usually come in during the early stages of a project, and use wireframes and prototypes to plan out design, architecture, and interactions. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's not a real job. But I feel like it should be called something else, like maybe "e;Prototype Designer"e; or "e;User Experience Consultant"e; if the person comes in at a later stage to analyze an existing site. In my mind, the title of "e;User Experience Designer"e; does not belong to a single person. Instead, it should be embraced by everybody contributing to the project, whether they are a designer, coder, photographer, writer, or systems administrator. Because after all, their work is what ultimately defines the user's experience. "e;Can You Add More UX to It?"e; Why is that important at all? Isn't all this just a question of semantics? Well, yes, it is. But bad semantics lead to bad communication, and that in turn leads to bad results. It's not uncommon to hear clients asking if you "e;do UX"e; or asking a designer if they "e;focus on UX."e; UX soon becomes an empty buzzword that can mean whatever the client wants it to mean. User Experience Professionals have done a great job of promoting UX as a concept. But I feel it's now time that designers reclaim that term and make it clear that "e;UX"e; is not a mysterious new idea, but instead part of what every designer does every day. Order Structure And Topological Methods In Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations: Vol. 1: Maximum Principles And Applications
S$ 279.90
Goguru

The maximum principle induces an order structure for partial differential equations, and has become an important tool in nonlinear analysis. This book is the first of two volumes to systematically introduce the applications of order structure in certain nonlinear partial differential equation problems. The maximum principle is revisited through the use of the Krein-Rutman theorem and the principal eigenvalues. Its various versions, such as the moving plane and sliding plane methods, are applied to a variety of important problems of current interest. The upper and lower solution method, especially its weak version, is presented in its most up-to-date form with enough generality to cater for wide applications. Recent progress on the boundary blow-up problems and their applications are discussed, as well as some new symmetry and Liouville type results over half and entire spaces. Some of the results included here are published for the first time.

Foundational Principles of Christianity
S$ 8.50
Goguru

Foundational Principles of Christianity is about a return to the Word, which incorporates the basic tenets of the New Testament. In this book, Adalbert Tanyi urges believers to once more examine the depth of their roots in the Word so as to be in conformity with the demands of the Kingdom and to avoid the strange doctrines which are so predominant in the twenty-first century. The principles outlined in this book are each backed by Scripture. Written in simple everyday language and illustrated with day-to-day examples, the book inspires the believer to understand and abide in sound doctrine. It can therefore serve as a handbook and reference during personal or group Bible studies. Aside from it being a teaching aid, the book is also an evangelistic tool, enlightening the unbeliever and guiding him in prayer at the foot of the cross. Rev. Tibets Great Yogi Milarepa: A Biography from the Tibetan being the Jetsun-Kabbum or Biographical History of Jetsun-Milarepa, According to the Late Lama Kazi Dawa-Samdups English Rendering
S$ 6.90
Goguru

This life story of Milarepa--the important Tibetan religious leader who lived over 800 years ago--is part of a remarkable four-volume series on Tibetan Buddhism produced by the late W.Y. Evans-Wentz, all four of which are being published by Oxford in new editions. While there are many parochial differences among the several sects of Tibetan Buddhism, each holds the Great Yogi Milarepa in the highest reverence and esteem. For exemplified in Milarepas life, as we discover in these pages, are all of the teachings of the great yogis of India--including those of Gautama the Buddha, the greatest yogi known to history. Amid his detailed introductory and explanatory notes for this text, Evans-Wentz also reveals compelling similarities between the life and thought of Milarepa and those of Jesus, Gandhi, and saints...in ancient China, or India, or Babylonia, or Egypt, or Rome, or in our own epoch. In composing this translation from the original Tibetan, the late Lama Kazi Dawa-Samdup, who was Evans-Wentzs guru for many years, aimed to show Western readers one of our great teachers as he actually lived...much of which is couched in the words of his own mouth, and the remainder in the words of his disciple Rechung, who knew him in the flesh. For this third edition, Donald S. Lopez, author of Prisoners of Shangri-La: Tibetan Buddhism and the West, has written a critical foreword that updates and contextualizes this crucial part of Evans-Wentzs scholarship within the yoga tradition.

Biography of Linus Torvalds
S$ 5.40
Goguru

ABOUT THE BOOK Linus Torvalds is considered in Europe, the United States, and beyond, to be one of the most important people of the past 100 years. Some people even call him a revolutionary hero. Why? Because Torvalds is the inventor and chief architect of Linux, a computer language that has gained worldwide acceptance and popularity. Linux forms the basis of a computer operating system in the same respect that DOS forms the basis of Microsoft Windows, or UNIX forms the basis of the Apple Mac operating system. Torvalds is also credited with other inventions such as the Git system for revision controlwhich he developed as a way to keep track of all the changes happening to Linux, (which has become way too massive a project for one person to manage). Git is essentially a file system for large software projects, according to Torvalds. MEET THE AUTHOR Abdul Montaqim is a journalist, based in London, and has been working in the media since 1989. Among the more well known titles he has written for are The Guardian newspaper, Time Out magazine and the International Business Times website. He has edited a number of local and community newspapers, magazines and websites, and has, over the course of his career, worked for some of the largest publishers in Europe, including Emap, LLP and Mirror Group Newspapers. Abdul has also worked outside of the United Kingdom, moving to Abu Dhabi for a year to work on the first national daily newspaper in United Arab Emirates, The National; and he has consulted for media companies in Bangladesh, where he was born. Abdul briefly worked for a New York-headquartered cable television channel called AsiaNet as a news editor, and realised that although he loves researching, writing and other "e;technical"e; parts of a journalist's job, he does not like presenting, preferring to be behind the camera or back in the studio. He also realised that, although reporting a story through the medium of television is obviously different from telling it through a newspaper or magazine, the heart and mind of every media company is researching and writing. In his spare time, Abdul likes to spend time with his family, cooking, eating, watching films, listening to music, reading and writing. When he goes out he likes to watch movies at the best cinemas, see live music performances, and eat at good restaurants. He also loves gardening, fishing and going for long walks. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Linus Benedict Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969, in Helsinki, Finland. His family was part of Finlands Swedish-speaking minority, which represents around 5.6 percent of Finlands 5.4 million population. Both his parentsAnna and Nils Torvaldsare journalists who were radical activists during their student days at the University of Helsinki in the 1960s. Nils, who was a communist in the early days, has since somewhat moderated his views; he now combines politics with journalism, and won election to Helsinki City Council for the term 2009-2012. Nilss father, Ole, was a poet who won literary awards for his work during the 1940s, and then later in the 1970s. The family is believed to have named their computer genius progeny, Linus, after the American Nobel prize-winning scientist and peace activist Linus Pauling. But Torvalds himself once said, I think I was named equally for Linus the Peanuts cartoon character, adding that this makes him half Nobel-prize-winning chemist and half blanket-carrying cartoon character. Its likely that this is yet more evidence of Torvaldss modesty and self-deprecating nature. Quicklet on Walter Isaacson's Kissinger: A Biography (CliffsNotes-like Book Summary)
S$ 5.40
Goguru

ABOUT THE BOOKKissinger: A Biography by Walter Isaacson is arguably the most thoroughly researched account of this both highly influential and also much maligned American statesman. The mere mention of the name Kissinger in political or academic circles is bound to elicit quite possibly very intense, even venomous debate among a wide range of those who are extremely or passingly familiar with the history of United States foreign policy during the Cold War and U.S. involvement in Vietnam. Depending on the source of a given spoken-word rant or prose diatribe, the name Kissinger could be synonymous with amoral imperialist hubris or the epitome of resolve and realist sensibility in the face of irrationally misguided public opinion. For this reason, Isaacson's primary motivation for this book was to present Kissinger in the most objective light he could. "e;Though I leave it to the reader to decide whether I have succeeded, my goal was to produce an unbiased biography that portrayed Kissinger in all of his complexity,"e; Isaacson wrote. And while the complex character of this particular biographical subject certainly makes for an interesting read, for a researcher/writer, this most definitely poses a significant challenge.MEET THE AUTHORJoe Taglieri is a professional journalist and musician (drum set and Latin percussion instruments) in Los Angeles. He has written on a range of subjects for a variety of publications since the 1990s. Taglieri's forte is writing about governmental and economic issues, and he has a keen interest in sports and the arts, most notably music, television and film. He holds a degree in print journalism from the University of Southern California and has studied, taught and performed via the drum set for nearly 25 years and has done the same with Latin percussion instruments such as conga and bongo drums, cajn and timbales for more than 15 years.EXCERPT FROM THE BOOKKissinger came of age and into his own professionally during the most tumultuous period in recent history. It is at least fair to acknowledge that Kissinger's world view guiding his actions as the world's most influential policymaker were formulated during very stressful times. Early on, from his teenage German exodus to the many nail-biting moments that accompanied his life during World War II and the beginning stages of the Cold War, Kissinger and his colleagues were involved in the study and practice of international relations. He faced having to provide answers to difficult questions never before faced by his predecessors. One such telling example is the emergence of nuclear weapons as a major factor affecting power balances and diplomatic relationships between the nuclear powers of the Soviet Union and China. Additionally, nations in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East such as Angola and Palestine/Israel were in their early generational adjustment to post-colonial existence, which for many resulted in revolutionary violence. To many, U.S. foreign policy heavily influenced by Kissinger appeared to be assuming the role formerly occupied by British and other former European colonial masters...Buy a copy to keep reading!

Biography of Robert Pattinson
S$ 5.40
Goguru

ABOUT THE BOOK With his thick mane of unruly hair and his charming English accent, Robert Pattinson has made a name for himself as a sexy Hollywood star. Pattinson has starred in a number of movies to date, but the role of Edward Cullen in the Twilight Saga movies has made him an international celebrity. Before Pattinson transformed himself into the leading vampire inspired by Stephanie Meyer's books, he was known as a minor character in the Harry Potter movie franchise. Now, wherever he goes and whatever role he steps into, Robert Pattinson is instantly recognized as the industry's hottest vampire. Rarely do actors land roles as meaty as Twilight's vampire Edward Cullen. When Pattinson brought the brooding character to life, he made women across the world weak in the knees. Cullen's sparkling skin, vegetarianism and deep gazes made Pattinson an instant star in 2008. Since the original Twilight movie, four sequels have been filmed. Each new movie has earned hundreds of millions of dollars. It is estimated that the franchise is worth over one billion dollars. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Robert Douglas Thomas Pattinson was born May 13, 1986, in London, England. His mother, Clare Pattinson, worked for a modeling agency. His father, Robert Pattinson, was the head of a car importing business. Robert has two older sisters, Lizzie Pattinson and Victoria Pattinson. While he was growing up in Barnes, one of London's suburbs, Robert enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He was quite a gifted athlete, and took part in such sports as soccer, skiing, snowboarding and skateboarding. Robert participated in local sports leagues at his school, Tower House School. Robert's sister Lizzie was a budding musician, and for a long time Robert wished to follow her path. Lizzie had three hit singles in the UK from her groups Aurora and Milk & Sugar. Robert learned how to play the guitar and the keyboards, and in his spare time he practiced his songwriting skills. Robert's mother, however, had different plans for him. At a young age, Clare encouraged her son to try out modeling. Robert modeled for about four years, beginning when he was twelve years old. Because he was tall, thin and androgynous, his look proved quite popular for a short period of time. As soon as he began to look more masculine, though, his modeling career fizzled out. Pattinson recalls, "e;When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs, because it was during that period where the androgynous look was cool. Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs. I had the most unsuccessful modeling career."e; Buy a copy to keep reading!CHAPTER OUTLINEBiography of Robert Pattinson+ Introduction+ Background+ Major Achievements+ Personal Life+ ...and much more

Julian Assange: Biography of the Wikileaks Mastermind
S$ 5.40
Goguru

ABOUT THE BOOKIn 2010, Julian Assange became a household name after his website Wikileaks began publishing top secret information about government departments around the world. Assange, a highly intelligent man, was able to hack numerous governmental databases, and he used his site to release the information periodically. Controversial information, such as details about the Guantanamo Bay operations, was posted online for the world to see, inciting public outrage towards various governments.Aside from his fame with Wikileaks, Assange's life has been tarred with controversy. Later in 2010, the Wikileaks founder was accused of several sexual allegations by women in Sweden with whom he had previously had relationships. His case has since been tried through many courts of appeal in the United Kingdom.EXCERPT FROM THE BOOKWhile hacking with the International Subversives, Assange acted as a leader and ensured that those who hacked with him did not cause harm. He had a list of rules: get information, always cover your tracks, and never damage systems or drastically alter them other than to gain entry. This ethical approach later led to the judge overseeing his first hacking trial to decide that Assange did not hack for personal gain; he hacked from curiosity.Although Assange was extremely talented and attempted to cover his tracks, he was formally charged with 30 counts of hacking in 1991, and was later convicted of 25 counts in 1995. This came despite both Assange and his fellow hackers taking steps to cover their tracks. The Australian Federal Police had begun tracking the International Subversives and monitoring Assange's movements in other ways. By monitoring their phone lines, they discovered that Assange had hacked into the systems of Nortel, a Canadian communications company, and the USAF 7th command group in the Pentagon.Despite facing quite serious charges, Assange escaped jail with little more than a $2,1000 fine. The judge who spared him the trauma of a custodial sentence not only took note of his ethical approach to hacking, he also examined Assange's childhood and found that he had come from a disruptive background. Although he was a convicted hacker, the Australian Federal Police would later use Assange's talents to assist them with child abuse cases...Buy a copy to keep reading!

Mark Twain, a Biography - Volume III, Part 2: 1907-1910

pubOne.info present you this new edition. Clemens made a brief trip to Bermuda during the winter, taking Twichell along; their first return to the island since the trip when they had promised to come back so soon-nearly thirty years before. They had been comparatively young men then. They were old now, but they found the green island as fresh and full of bloom as ever. They did not find their old landlady; they could not even remember her name at first, and then Twichell recalled that it was the same as an author of certain schoolbooks in his youth, and Clemens promptly said, "e;Kirkham's Grammar. "e; Kirkham was truly the name, and they went to find her; but she was dead, and the daughter, who had been a young girl in that earlier time, reigned in her stead and entertained the successors of her mother's guests. They walked and drove about the island, and it was like taking up again a long-discontinued book and reading another chapter of the same tale. It gave Mark Twain a fresh interest in Bermuda, one which he did not allow to fade again.

Biographies provide a glimpse into the past or capture the life and experiences of an icon, allowing readers to walk in someone else’s shoes. A meaningful biography can serve as a great teacher, offering valuable life lessons and teaching readers to be like the subject or sometimes, not to be like the subject. Fictional stories make for fun reads as well, but nothing is as compelling and inspirational as real-life recollections of one’s life. Noteworthy biography recommendations that everyone should own, or at least read about, are mentioned below.
