River Cafe Cook Book 2
S$ 19.00
Kobo
The first River Cafe Cook Book was a publishing phenomenon, winning both the Glenfiddich Food Book of the Year and the BCA Illustrated Book of the Year Awards. As well as the innovative, striking design of the book, the appeal also lies in the exquisite simplicity of its food. A sophisticated re-interpretation of the cucina rustica or farmhouse cooking of northern Italy, the food of the River Cafe relies on good quality, fresh, seasonal produce. Ruth and Rose's direct, uncomplicated approach means that many of the dishes are strikingly simple - fish, meat and vegetables are chargrilled, pan-fried and baked - but all of them are vibrant with flavour. This cookbook retains the essential style of the River Cafe while reflecting the new directions Ruth and Rose's cooking took since their first book; meat is less prominent, for example, while vegetables and vegetarian food have become more important; techniques, such as wood-roasting are featured, always with advice on how the results can be achieved in a domestic oven. With over 200 new recipes, River Cafe Cook Book 2 is a must both for the many people who loved the first volume and for those who have yet to discover the delights of the River Cafe's unique style of Italian cooking.

This first cookbook published in Indiana was originally titled in its first edition Mrs. Collins' Table Receipts: Adapted to Western Housewifery. It became so popular that in 1857 it was republished in New York City under the name The Great Western Cook Book. Collins noted in her preface that the book was intended for "Ladies of the West," and thus there are recipes such as Sausage-Hoosier Fashion and Veal-Western Fashion included for pioneer women in the "West" of its time. Noting that "Our generous and prolific clime affords a bountiful supply of nutritious fruits and vegetables, and our forests and hill sides abound in excellent Game," Collins included many recipes that used local produce and ingredients. The first recipe in the book for California Soup provides a method for homemade bouillon cubes, named for travelers heading further west during the gold rush years. This edition of The Great Western Cook Book by Angelina Maria Collins was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the Society is a research library documenting the life of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The Society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection includes approximately 1,100 volumes.

The Farmer's Wife Slow Cooker Cookbook

The early twentieth-century world of The Farmer's Wife may be vastly different than our own hectic, high-tech times, but some things never change-like a taste for the kind of food that's cooked all day, the long-simmered stews and chilis, pot roasts and soups and puddings that savor of comfort and care. Culled from the pages of The Farmer's Wife and adapted for contemporary lifestyles and kitchenware, these recipes help today's cook recapture the full rich flavor of slow-cooked food steeped in the traditions of America's heartland. With a modicum of preparation in the morning or even the night before, anyone can come home to the kind of meals that yesterday's farmer's wife prepared; the slow-cooked beans and barbeque, casseroles, and hot dishes that could serve a few friends, a big hungry family, or a whole community. For party dishes that let a host focus on guests; for meals that won't heat up the summer kitchen; for hearty, delicious fare to satisfy gatherings big and small with leftovers to store for later meals, these slow-cooker recipes are the perfect time-wise, money-saving way to dish up a great helping of farmland history.

'I am going to cook you the best meal you have ever tasted in your life…' Harry Palmer to Sue Lloyd in 'The Ipcress Files' 'Len was a great cook, a smashing cook. I learned a lot about food from playing Harry Palmer' Michael Caine If you look carefully at Harry Palmer's kitchen in the classic film 'The Ipcress Files' you will notice a newspaper pinned on the wall. This is one of Len Deighton's classic cookstrips, the series that ran for two years when he was the Observer food writer. Because before he became famous as the thriller writer of his generation, Len Deighton had trained as a pastry chef. He was also a brilliant graphic artist (his credits include the first ever UK cover for Kerouac's 'On The Road'). 'The Action Cookbook' is the perfect mix of these two passions, created for the hero of his third passion. 'The Action Cook Book' was once an instructional book for the bachelor male - a guide to sophisticated cooking for the would-be Harry Palmer. It now has a great following as a fabulous piece of nostalgia as well as retaining real credibility as a genuinely useful cook book. If you need to create the basic wine cellar (basic to Len Deighton - decidedly aspirational to the rest of us), or to learn how to cook full-bodied meals with a seductive touch (how could you resist brain soufflé? - 'brains are a very good constituent for a souffle. They are delicious fried, or in any of the piquant wine sauces'), then this is the book for you.

You probably own a slow cooker-80 percent of American households do. For more than thirty years, its unbeatable convenience and practicality have made it a staple of busy families, enabling anyone to return to a home-cooked meal at the end of a hectic day. Many slow cooker recipes, however, have relied on less-than-healthy convenience products. Now, Beth Hensperger and Julie Kaufmann's Not Your Mother's® Slow Cooker Cookbook takes a completely fresh look at cooking with this popular appliance. This comprehensive collection of 350 recipes combines the ease of slow cooking with the fresh, wholesome ingredients and exciting flavors of today's kitchen. For days when there's just no time for prep, there's Orange and Honey Chicken Drumsticks or Country Ribs with Onions, Apples, and Sauerkraut. For (slightly!) less hectic days there's Tangy Tomato Brisket or Lentil and Red Pepper Soup. Stay out of the kitchen when guests arrive with Duck Breasts with Port Wine Sauce or wake up to breakfast with Hot Apple Granola Oatmeal. Hensperger and Kaufmann offer dishes for every time frame, without compromising on taste, quality, or variety. And Not Your Mother's® Slow Cooker Cookbook showcases the best of home cooking while taking advantage of a global melting pot of flavors-so cooks can serve Chicken and Shrimp Jambalaya one day and Japanese Beef Curry Rice another. All the classic slow cooker recipes are here, plus many more adventuresome and innovative dishes. There is also practical information on the different types of slow cookers, their latest accessories, and what sizes are best for what purposes.

Not everything that I say will fit everybody, I wrote info as I see it although you have the option as a reader to either use it or loose it. LOL It's up to the reader to make choices, my book is not telling you what to do. I just tend to suggest a lot. Capishe? I hope all of my opinion recipes are helpful and inspiring. I just want to help everyone see things clearly hopefully before you are in a situation that you prefer not to be. Now, as far as the food recipes, you will find recipes in this book that are my very own creations and recipes that have been shared with me sometimes not knowing where they originated. And there are those recipes that have been passed down in my family…some for many generations. Nancy Douglass

Eating with the Pharaohs: An Ancient Egypt Cook Book Part 1
S$ 3.50
Kobo
Eating with the Pharaohs is a small collection of recipes and stories written by Pentu the Scribe who served as Master of Pharaoh's Kitchen. They bring to us part of the struggle of working as a cook in the Egypt of the pyramid builders. The recipes roughly describe the ingredients and ways of preparing the food more than four thousand years ago when accurate measuring was something not applied to food. In this intriguing cook book the author has researched plants, animal products and other elements that the ancient cooks used to produce the food and drink for the Pharaohs and their families; feeding the living god was something only few could do, with some of these few, the dedicated servants of Pharaoh immortalized on the walls of tombs and temples. A great read and a great feed!

The food items described in this book will help not only in preventing further deposits of cholesterol and fat inside the heart tubes but also in removal and reversal of the deposits. The common belief that these blockages can not be removed once formed, has been proved to be wrong by the scientific research carried out in the last one decade. Using sophisticated techniques like quantitative angiography has proved the reversal of coronary blockages. Cardiologists and the latest textbooks of cardiology have now agreed that the blockages can be removed as sufficient data is available to prove the same. This book is a step to guide people about the food part of the total lifestyle changes required to reverse the heart diseases. The cooking method used in this book is without the use of any kind of oils. That is why it is called zero oil. One must remember that the use of these oils can be detrimental for our health, as in the modern era we do not exercise or perform enough physical activity required to utilize these high calorie fatty items.

Slow-cooked flavor in a fast-paced world - pressure cookers are one of the greenest cooking methods imaginable. Sales are on the increase and even Jamie Oliver has launched one of his own. They allow us to cook quickly, cheaply and efficiently because the food is cooked in liquid at temperatures far higher than in a conventional pan, which shortens cooking time by up to 70 percent. Because the method seals in flavor, cheaper ingredients can be used to great effect and since the cooking time is far shorter you save time and gas or electricity. The pressure cooker presents a distinct advantage for certain foods and for ingredients that need long cooking, it is a real winner. The most dramatic time and energy savings come with meat and poultry. Braised beef can be perfectly cooked in 30 minutes, osso bucco in 25 minutes and a chicken tagine in 15 minutes. Perfect for today's cooks. Marguerite Patten, doyenne of British cookery, shares her wealth of knowledge and her tried and tested recipes for pressure cookers.

Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray have an unswervingly clear vision of how food should be cooked: they take immense care over the ingredients and cook them as simply as possible. But one vitally important element in the art of preparing good food is one which we have increasingly lost sight of: seasonality. If you cook food in its right season it will inevitably taste better. And that's what River Cafe Cookbook Green is all about. Divided into months, the twelve chapters look at which vegetables, herbs, leaves, fungi and fruits are at their best at any given time, with information on how they are grown, which varieties to select and how to prepare them. The focus is also on organic produce, something in which Ruth and Rose have come to believe passionately. Meat and fish recipes are certainly included in the book, but the emphasis here is much more on vegetables, pasta recipes etc, in line with the way we are increasingly eating today. Fully illustrated throughout, and even larger than before, this cookbook is an education as well as a culinary treasure-trove.

Published in 1876 in Michigan, The Hygienic Cook Book was part of the 19th century health reform movement that stressed a vegetarian diet to achieve wellness. Author John Harvey Kellogg, an American physician, took the health reformer's diet even further by emphasizing abstinence from caffeine, alcohol, spices, condiments, dairy, eggs, and vinegar. Kellogg believed that "[c]ondiments are innutritious and irritating….they irritate the digestive organs, impairing their tone and deranging their function." Above all, he stressed the importance of bowel health for an overall healthy body. Along with tips for reforming the diet as well as reasons for abstaining from animal products, spices, and condiments, The Hygienic Cook Book also contains wholesome recipes such as Johnny Cakes, Potato Bread, Apple Brown Bread, Graham Crackers, and Peach Toast. While Kellogg's hygienic diet might not be for all tastes, The Hygienic Cook Book offers a fascinating look into the 19th century's new focus on a healthier diet. This edition of The Hygienic Cook Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. The society collects, preserves, and makes available as complete a record as possible of the printed materials from the early American experience. The cookbook collection comprises approximately 1,100 volumes.

Published in 1872 in Boston, The Appledore Cook Book was authored by renowned cooking teacher and writer Maria Parloa to be a go-to cookbook for new brides and housekeepers, and it was specifically geared toward simpler recipes with less expensive ingredients. This first of many cookbooks by Parloa was inspired by her time spent cooking at the Appledore House hotel on the Isles of Shoals, Maine. The Appledore Cook Book contains the first known recipe for tomato chowder (known today as tomato soup) as well as delectable family-sized recipes such as Lamb Chops, Dumplings for Soup, Baked Potatoes, Fried Ham, Buckwheat Cakes, Apple Cake, Ginger Snaps, and Pumpkin Pie. Emphasizing the purpose of this popular cookbook, Parloa states in the preface, "The great trouble with all the cook books which I have known. is, that they are too expensive, and that they use weight instead of measure, and also that they take for granted that the young housekeeper knows many things which she really does not." With The Appledore Cook Book, Parloa provides just such a cookbook of simple-yet-tasty, inexpensive meals-a theme as popular in the 19th century as it is today. This edition of The Appledore Cook Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the society is a research library documenting the lives of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. An exciting new cookery book from a first-time author and hard-working mother of two. Elisa Beynon won a competition to find a new and original voice in food writing, which was run in 2007 by Fourth Estate and Waitrose Food Illustrated. Her entry impressed the judges - among them Nigel Slater - with its emphasis on creating nutritious, affordable, practical meals for guests and a young family alike. Putting her family's well-being at the heart of all her cooking, Elisa really considers what people at her table would most like to eat. Creating a gluten-free eating plan with foods that have a low glycemic index, or GI, can be a balancing act. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and possibly oats that causes a severe autoimmune reaction in people with celiac disease. The starchy vegetables and grains that replace foods with gluten may have a high GI value, meaning that they can raise your blood sugar quickly after you eat them. Whether you have celiac disease or are eating gluten-free foods for other dietary reasons, you can keep your blood sugar stable by emphasizing low-GI gluten substitutes and increasing your intake of foods that are naturally gluten-free. Glycemic Index The glycemic index evaluates the effects of foods on your blood glucose levels. Foods that rank high on a scale of one to 100 raise your blood sugar rapidly, while foods that rank in the middle or at the lower end of the scale will have a less dramatic effect. Slow cookers are among an array of old kitchen gadgets making a comeback. Most of us are experiencing the joys of cooking delicious readymade meals at home. The extended cooking times allow better distribution of flavors in many recipes. You will finding amazing more then 85 recipes to design a low glycemic gluten-free eating plan that will keep your blood glucose levels within a healthy range. About ten years ago the idea of writing a little cook book had its birth. We were in Almora that summer. Almora is a station far up in the Himalayas, a clean little bazaar nestles at the foot of enclosing mountains. Dotting the deodar-covered slopes of these mountains are the picturesque bungalows of the European residents, while towering above and over all are the glistening peaks of the eternal snows. We love to think of this particular summer, for Lilavate Singh was with us. The thought of her always brings help and inspiration. One day she prepared for the crowd of us a tiffin of delicious Hindustani food. That afternoon while we were sitting under the shade and fragrance of the deodar trees, we praised the tiffin. Before we knew it we were planning a cook book. It was to be a joint affair of Hindustani and English dishes, and Miss Singh was to be responsible for the Hindustani part of it. Our enthusiasm grew. For three or four days we talked of nothing else. We experimented, we planned; we dreamed, we wrote. But alas! other things soon thrust themselves upon us, and our unfinished cook book was pigeon-holed for years and years. And it is not now what it would have been if finished then. Many of the recipes, however, are those that Miss Singh gave us then. Some of them she might not recognize, for they have become quite Americanized, but they are hers nevertheless, and I hope that you will not only try them and enjoy them, but that they will help you to solve some of the problems of living and giving which are confronting us all these days.I have told this story before, but it fits in well here. A lady in India once had an ayah, who from morning until night sang the same sad song as she would wheel the baby in its little go-cart up and down the mandal or driveway; as she would energetically jump it up and down; as she would lazily pat it to sleep, always and ever she could be heard chanting plaintively, "Ky a ke waste, Ky a ke waste, pet ke waste, pet ke waste." Dump Cakes Cook Book

Dump cake is usually a combination of canned fruit, with cherries and pineapples being some of the most preferred. Fruit is usually drained and combined on the bottom of a baking dish. Next, people add yellow or white cake mix, simply pouring the mix right over the fruit. Recipes vary but most then direct people to add slices of butter on top of the cake mix. When the cake is baked it has a lovely top crust that is buttery over a layer of sweet fruit. It's difficult to find dessert recipes that are easier to make than dump cake. With the exception of stirring the fruit, you really need to do very little to assemble this cake. It's a great recipe for beginning cooks, especially young ones. Even little kids can make dump cake because they usually don't have to measure ingredients.

This is a high quality book of the original classic edition. It was previously published by other bona fide publishers, and is now, finally, back in print. This is a freshly published edition of this culturally important work, which is now, at last, again available to you. Enjoy this classic work. These few paragraphs distill the contents and gives you a short overview and insight of this work and the author's style: At a dinner there is time, not given at most other forms of entertainment, for rational and sustained conversation, and this may be turned to durance vile if one victimizes by egotism or caprice the person who without power of withdrawal is assigned to his or her society for perhaps two hours or more. .This is for good reason, as the host cannot well fulfil his social part if he has to do the carving; therefore, unless on very informal occasions, when the number of servants may be insufficient, the carving is done on the side-table, or the garnished dishes are cut in the kitchen. .For large dinners two or more dishes should be arranged to pass on opposite sides of the table, so that every one may be served at about the same time. .Before the dessert is served, all the plates, the small silver, the salt- and pepper-boxes, the hors d'auvres, and such glasses as will not be again used are removed; the crumbs are then taken off, a silver crumb knife and a plate being used for this purpose. .Large round tops are made to fit over extension-tables, which will seat from twelve to twenty or more people; and when the size of the room will permit, this is the pleasantest form of table for entertainments, and best lends itself to decorative effects, giving to each person a complete picture of the table and of the company assembled.

Once life and culture had stabilized in the 19th century and moved beyond the frontier focus on subsistence and survival, Americans began to explore the idea of improving health and creating more comfortable lifestyles. Health reform in the late 19th century emerged from the idea that a healthy body and practicing moderation in daily living were necessary to a spiritual, meaningful existence. From these ideas, the vegetarian philosophy was codified, and The Health Reformer's Cook Book embraced trends that still have significance today. As stated in the book, it's "object is to restore the sick to health by means of. pure air, pure water, sun-light, sleep, proper clothing, judicious exercise, healthful food, pleasant social influences, & c, excluding all poisonous drugs." The Health Reformer's Cook Book is based on the methods and beliefs that Jackson and her husband actually employed at a health facility founded by her husband. Following the health reform ideals of the time, Jackson included recipes to limit excessive eating and following a vegetarian diet focused on simple meals of fruits, vegetables, and grains-all trends that still resonant with health experts today. This edition of The Health Reformer's Cook Book was reproduced by permission from the volume in the collection of the American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas, a Revolutionary War patriot and successful printer and publisher, the Society is a research library documenting the life of Americans from the colonial era through 1876. Your Guide to Choosing a Cookbook in Singapore

Due to the wide array of cookbooks on the market, choosing the right one can be a challenge. But don’t fret because here is a list of things that will help you decide easier. Keeping in mind the following points below will not only fulfill your need for getting the right cookbook but you will also discover and practice great recipes. You’ll be serving gastronomic delicacies from around the world to your dining table which you and your family will surely enjoy.

Determine the type of cuisine you want to cook

First off, you must figure out what kinds of cuisine you want to make. If you want to try local dishes, it is best to get a book that has various local or traditional recipes in it. Such book not only improves your cooking prowess but also your knowledge about the local dishes in your town or country in a comprehensive way. On the other hand, if you want to make various delicacies from other parts of the world, say popular cuisines in Thailand, then you’d better pick a Thai cookbook. Making cuisines out of international recipes will help you discover the unique ingredients, names, and taste of each country in terms of cooking. Not only that, it also enhances your culinary expertise and as well as your knowledge about a country’s culture. Apart from these, here are other types of cookbooks with recipes that you may want to try:

Vegetarian Cookbook

If you are into a healthy lifestyle, making new meat-free delicacies is easy with the help of a vegetarian cookbook. Having this kind of cookbook is a must-have in any kitchen and might come in handy during dinner parties. For instance, your boss’ wife who’s a vegetarian comes in for your dinner party, having at least two or three delectable meat-free dishes will surely satisfy her. In that way, your boss will be happy seeing his wife enjoying her dinner. Moreover, a vegetarian cookbook not only enhances your skill in cooking vegetables but also adds versatility in your cooking prowess.

Super Simple Cookbook

Make simple delicacies for yourself, friends or family by using only 5 ingredients or less with a super simple cookbook. This type of cookbook doesn’t need you to pick up tons of items from the grocery store. However, it sometimes contains recipes that include packaged products, so better try to avoid those if you are health-conscious. Always go for recipes with raw ingredients which will benefit your health.

Look for Cookbooks with Visual Guides

Once you figure out what type of cookbook you want, the next step is to check if it has photos. One of the biggest elements that make a cookbook effective and easy to understand is its picture. A cookbook that doesn’t have images is less appealing compared to one that is filled with visual guides and eye-catching photos of dishes. Cookbooks with visual guides help a lot in cooking, unlike text-based ones as you have to use your imagination in following the instructions. Nevertheless, you can cook food out of a text-based cookbook as long as the recipes come with well-written and clear instructions.

Aside from cookbooks, you can also find a great selection of reading materials online such as linguistic books, children's books, comics and so much more!
