As technology advances, many electrical devices have been produced to become more portable so that users can carry these devices with them anywhere. However, being portable also means that the devices require a reliable power source to keep them running. This is where batteries come in, being trustworthy sources to power the appliances that you use daily. Without batteries, we will still be living in a world where almost all devices that use electricity – smartphones, flashlights, cameras, and even our cars – need to be plugged into the main power socket to function! We will not be able to use these devices as freely as we can today, thanks to the invention of batteries.
How Batteries Came About
The first electrochemical battery was created by Alessandro Volta in 1800, using a stack of copper and zinc plates which were separated by brined-soaked paper disk. This battery, known as the voltaic pile, produced a steady current over a considerable amount of time. However, its voltage fluctuated and thus was not suitable to be used for powering any devices at that time.
Then, in 1836, British chemist John Frederic Daniell invented the Daniell Cell, was the first practical source of electricity and was used to power up electrical telegraph networks. However, this battery contained wet cells, which used wet electrolytes and were prone to leakage and spillage, thus making them dangerous and unsuitable to power portable devices. Eventually, nearing the end of the 19th century, the creation of dry cell batteries was invented, making powering up portable electrical devices possible.
Batteries Singapore – Types of Batteries Available Today
In the modern world that we are living in today, there are many portable appliances that use electrical energy to function. As such, batteries – which converts chemical energy into electrical energy, is a versatile and simple source of energy to power these devices. Batteries are also commonly found in Singapore’ market. From alkaline batteries from brands such as Duracell, Energizer, and GP that you can find at shopping centers, to vehicle batteries that are available mostly in mechanic shops and car repair centers, batteries are abundant for Filipinos.
Commercial batteries can typically be categorized into two main types, namely primary and secondary batteries. Primary batteries are basically one-time use batteries are disposed after they have lost their ability to produce electrical energy. Despite being one-time use batteries, they usually have a long battery life – ranging from a few weeks to six months – depending on its frequency of usage. Secondary batteries, on the other hand, are designed to be reused multiple times. Instead of discarding them when they are unable to produce electrical energy, they can be recharged and be used again to power the appliance after recharging. Recharging these batteries back to full capacity usually only takes about 6 hours at most.
