The establishment of HP

In the 1930s, HP founders Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard met at Stanford University. At this time, Silicon Valley was nothing more than a large span of agriculture that had orchards and farms. Within a small garage located in Palo Alto, Hewlett and Packard agreed on a joint-venture that started the birth of Silicon Valley as we know of it now.

The very first breakthrough that they stumbled upon was devices that measure sound frequencies; the resistance-tuned audio oscillator. They named it the Model 200A Audio Oscillator—a name they thought could make them look like an established company with an active product line.

By January 1939, Hewlett and Packard fully established their company with a name that was decided upon the result of a coin toss. This only happened after their success in the production and sale of their audio oscillator.

Not one year past that, the addition of two new employees deemed unfavourable for a headquarters and production centre. They moved to Palo Alto’s Page Mill Road.

It was not until 1966 that HP first developed, produced, and marketed its first computer. This was preceded by the establishment of HP Labs. This was then followed by the formation of the Hewlett Foundation and its first personal computer. While Hewlett became CEO and Packard got into the army, their company led in the laser interferometers industry which then was followed by the official entry into the business computing industry in 1972.

HP first developed its first PC in 1980. They move into China the next year. Following that, in 1982, HP launched its first handheld computer and desktop mainframes. Upon winning the science medal in 1983, HP introduced Touchscreen PC and it was followed by it first laptop in 1984. In the same year, HP invented the ThinkJet printing and launched the HP LaserJet. When HP launched its HP DeskkJet, the garage of which the company’s was established was named a landmark.

In 1991, HP decided to recycle toner cartridges which then revolutionized the colour printing industry. This resulted in the 10 million sale of HP LaserJets in 1993. Packard then publishes the HP Way in 1995, coincidentally being a goodbye notion to the passing of his partner in 1996.

It was after the passing of Hewlett in 2001 that HP Services was launched. It then started to contribute to nanotechnology and in 2002, HP merged with Compaq to better themselves together.

After the fight with counterfeiters and winning the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) award, HP furthered their path into great innovation and technological prowess in achieving its 100 millionth shipping of their LaserJet and the gesture-based keyboard.

In 2009, HP received the prestigious IEEE award again through its new paradigm for printing and the 3com acquisition.

HP started the free recycling programme for ink cartridges and then moved to the revolution of its Instant Ink and the milestone of the 200 millionth LaserJet shipped and sold. In 2013, HP signified the end of backup software with the industry’s first adaptive, dynamic, and self-aware backup and recovery solution, the HP Data Protector 8.1.
