Kim Sang Jin, the director of box-office comedy hits like Attack the Gas Station!, Kick the Moon, and Jail Breakers, certainly knows better than any mainstream filmmaker how to craft a perfectly tuned comedy. Stepping in as the main attraction for this belly-clenching flick is Na Moon Hee ( Cruel Winter Blues ) who plays the eccentric, feisty Granny K. The veteran actress is currently riding at the peak of her career as a result of her popular role in highly rated TV sitcom Unhindered Highkick . The three kidnappers played by Kang Sung Jin (Running Wild), Yu Hae Jin (Small Town Rivals), and Yoo Gun (Operation Makeover), somehow end up as pathetic victims of their own kidnappee in this hilarious film.

Three dopey kidnappers scheme to abduct Granny K (Na Moon Hee), a successful businesswoman who owns a soup 'n' rice restaurant chain, and demand a whopping 50 million won ransom. There's Moon Geun Young (Yoo Hae Jin), a dorky lad who got all his money swindled away after cashing out his precious savings for a Uzbekistani marriage expedition. Joining Geun Young in the action is another lad (Kang Sung Jin) in desperate need of money to bail out his pregnant wife from jail and his brother-in-law (Yoo Gun), a twenty-something mindless dude who's never attended school or held a job in his life. Mei Ah Project Makeover (VCD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 13.60
Contrary to what one may gather from the title, Korea's latest romantic comedy Project Makeover is not about changing appearances, but rather changing fates. Life is always full of "what ifs", and this film asks a simple question: what if you could go back in time to your first love? Knowing how things work out in the decade following, what would you do differently? First-time director Kim Chang Rae, who previously served as assistant director on the blockbuster Friend, spins a fun and interesting story in Operation Makeover (a.k.a. Project Makeover and Go Go Sister), topped with a hearty dose of 90s nostalgia. Actress Ko So Young (Apartment) and her younger counterpart Jo An (Holiday) present delightful portraits of the same woman at different ages. Backdropped by the music of popular 90s group DEUX, Operation Makeover revisits first love and reckless youth through a bumpy journey of romance and self-discovery.

Jeong Ju (Ko So Young) is a disgruntled 30-year-old woman with no boyfriend and a go-nowhere job. Bitter with how her life has turned out, she traces all her misfortunes to her first love Hani (singer Kim Jung Min in a cameo), a playboy who broke her heart and is now a famous singer. One day, she bumps into her high school friend Tae Hoon (Lee Bum Soo), who used to be a nerd but is now a rich and successful businessman. Jeong Ju knows that her life would be so much better if only she had fallen for the right guy in her teenage years. Unexpectedly, a chance to right wrongs comes up when a mysterious computer program transports Jeong Ju back in time to 1994. She is determined to show her 18-year-old self (Jo An) the correct path in life. Free-spirited teenaged Jeong Ju, however, is a lot more interested in the disingenuous Hani (Lee Joong Moon) than the doting Tae Hoon (Yoo Gun, Hello God), and she will not be so easily swayed.

Mei Ah Red Cliff (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 13.60
Legendary director John Woo (A Better Tomorrow, The Killer) returns to Asia after fifteen years in Hollywood with Red Cliff, his adaptation of the Chinese classic, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Woo's epic is much more faithful and grand than the recent Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon, but the director still puts his own personal stamp on the material, concentrating on his human heroes, their personal relationships, and above all the brotherhood they forge in the heat of battle. The first of two films chronicling the legendary battle, Red Cliff is without doubt the Chinese film event of the year.

Re-teaming with Woo for the first time since 1992's Hard Boiled is Tony Leung Chiu Wai, fresh from his Golden Horse Award-winning turn in Lust, Caution. Leung plays the role of strategist Zhou Yu, and stepped in to help old friend John Woo when original lead Chow Yun Fat vacated the leading role. Rounding out the all-star cast are Kaneshiro Takeshi (The Warlords), Chang Chen (The Go Master), Zhang Feng Yi (The Emperor and the Assassin), Vicki Zhao (Shaolin Soccer), Hu Jun (Infernal Affairs 2), Japanese actor Nakamura Shidou (Fearless), and in her debut performance, Taiwanese model Lin Chi Ling.

208 A.D., The Battle of Chang Ban. Liu Bei (You Yong) and his followers narrowly escape the armies of Prime Minister Cao Cao (Zhang Feng Yi), but Cao Cao's lust for power continues to grow. Fearing that Liu Bei and the Kingdom of Shu cannot oppose Cao Cao, strategist Zhuge Liang (Kaneshiro Takeshi) proposes an alliance with the Kingdom of Wu. However, Wu ruler Sun Quan (Chang Chen) is uncertain on challenging Cao Cao. Zhuge Liang instead looks to persuade Sun Quan's chief strategist Zhou Yu (Tony Leung Chiu Wai), and discovers in Zhou a kindred spirit versed in the arts as well as battle. The two men form an instant bond, and decide to battle Cao Cao at the water port of Red Cliff. Their alliance comes not a moment too soon, as Cao Cao approaches with an army that vastly outnumbers the combined Wu and Shu forces. But Zhuge Liang has a plan - one that will hopefully enable the smaller force to emerge victorious.

Mei Ah Butterfly Lovers (2008) (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 13.60
Some stories are timeless, and Butterfly Lovers is one of them. Director Jingle Ma (Fly Me to Polaris) tackles one of the classics with his retelling of this tragic love story, which also served as the basis for the 1963 Shaw Brother's classic The Love Eterne and Tsui Hark's 1994 drama The Lovers. This new version is a clever alternate take on the story of ill-fated lovers Leung Shan Pak and Cheuk Ying Toi, and is given a martial arts spin thanks to the masterful fight choreography of Ching Siu Tung (Hero). Wu Chun of Taiwan boy band Fahrenheit and Charlene Choi of Hong Kong's Twins play the two young lovers, with a host of talent from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan joining them. Actor-singer Hu Ge plays Wu Chun's main romantic rival, with supporting roles filled out by martial artists Hung Yan Yan and Fan Siu Wong, Shaw Brothers legend Ti Lung and Taiwan singer-songwriter Harlem Yu.

Adorable Zhu Yan Gi (Charlene Choi) is female, but her father (Ti Lung) wants her to learn martial arts from the all-male Soul Ease Clan. To ensure her entry into the school, Yan Gi disguises herself as a male scholar, but her slight frame and sometimes ditzy nature make it hard for her to pass the rigorous tests. Luckily, she has an ally in the school's top student, handsome Liang Chun Shan (Wu Chun), who tutors Yan Gi and even nurses her back to health when she takes ill. The two innocently fall in love, but even knowledge of Yan Gi's true identity may not insure their happiness. Yan Gi's childhood friend Ma (Hu Ge) has long carried a torch for her, and is not above using violence and blackmail to insure that she becomes his wife. When Ma's treachery is revealed, Chun Shan has no choice but to use all that he's learned from the Soul Ease Clan to exact justice. But will it be too late to save Yan Gi from a tragic fate?

Mei Ah Red Cliff 2 (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 13.60
After breaking box-office records with the 2008 release of Red Cliff, John Woo concludes his epic Three Kingdoms adaptation with Red Cliff 2. Tony Leung Chiu Wai (Infernal Affairs) and Kaneshiro Takeshi (Perhaps Love) return as Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang, and Zhang Feng Yi (Farewell, My Concubine) acts up a storm as the power-hungry Cao Cao. Chang Chen (The Go Master), Vicki Zhao (Painted Skin), Hu Jun (Infernal Affairs 2) and Nakamura Shido (Fearless) lend support, with Taiwanese model Lin Chi Ling taking on an expanded role as the beautiful Xiao Qiao, and Mainland actor Tong Da Wei joining the cast as one of Cao Cao's soldiers.

Despite the all-star cast, the action sequences are the star of this sequel. Red Cliff 2 climaxes with a riveting and stunningly realized fire attack at the water port of Red Cliff, as Zhao Yu leads the aligned Wu and Shu forces in a desperate attempt to repel Cao Cao's forces. In between the bloodletting and pyrotechnics, John Woo weaves in his trademark themes of brotherhood and honor, finding as much space in the film for emotion and character as he does for explosions and swordplay. A satisfying and vastly entertaining counterpart to the first film, Red Cliff 2 is already one of 2009's Chinese cinema highlights.

Picking up where the first film left off, Red Cliff 2 finds Wu princess Sun Shang Xiang (Vicki Zhao) behind enemy lines. As she plays spy for Shu strategist Zhuge Liang (Kaneshiro Takeshi), Sun Shang Xiang strikes up an inadvertent friendship with an unknowing enemy (Tong Da Wei). Mei Ah Crows Episode 0 (VCD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 9.30
Prolific maverick director Miike Takashi certainly kept the masses happy in 2007 with the release of three high-profile ready-made cult films. Sukiyaki Western Django and Like a Dragon both had enough Miike magic to spare, but it's Crows - Episode 0 that comes out on top of the heap as the auteur's most commercially successful film to date. Thanks to his extreme themes and even more extreme presentation, Miike alienates as much as he attracts, but he's got a legitimate box office hit on his hands with Crows - Episode 0. Based on Takahashi Hiroshi's bestselling manga Crows, Crows - Episode 0 takes Miike to familiar territory - high school gang violence - and he cuts through the subject matter at high-octane speed for a stylized, action-packed, and entertaining schoolyard brawl of a movie.

Delving into the hyper-stylized world of feuding high school gangs, Crows - Episode 0 actually takes place before the events of the manga (hence the title), setting up the origins and rivalries of the iconic characters. Other than the avid fanbase that already exists for the manga, Crows - Episode 0 gets some extra box office pull with the casting of heartthrobs Oguri Shun (Kisaragi) and Yamada Takayuki (Train Man) as the lead delinquents. Oguri, who also featured in Miike's Sukiyaki Western Django, continues to impress as one of Japanese cinema's most talented young stars, while Yamada Takayuki leaves behind the sensitive romantic lead image he's cultivated from numerous tearjerkers for a hard-hitting bout in the ring. Rounding out the film's problem teenager cast are Yabe Kyousuke (Dead or Alive, Kids Return), Kuroki Meisa (Under the Same Moon), and Izaki Yusuke and Izaki Hisato from boy band Flame.

Takaya Genji (Oguri Shun) just transferred to Suzuran, a high school notorious for its gang violence. At Suzuran High, hallways are battle zones, bloody brawls are everyday occurrences, and student life is dominated by the political winds of the school's many factions. Genji didn't end up here by accident though. He's here to do what even his yakuza father (Kishitani Goro) couldn't accomplish years before - rule the school. Already stirring up a storm on the first day, Genji is determined to fight his way up the pecking order and unite the gangs. But not if alpha crow Serizawa Tamao (Yamada Takayuki) has anything to say about it.

Released in Hong Kong and China around Valentine's Day, Give Love features the fresh pairing of popular singer-actress Gigi Leung (Turn Left Turn Right) and Taiwan actor Wilson Chen (Blue Gate Crossing, Kung Fu Dunk). Gigi Leung turns on the charms as the leggy unlucky-in-love heroine to Wilson Chen's straight man in this light romantic drama co-directed by rom-com king Joe Ma (Love Undercover) and actor-turned-director Leefire. Mainland television star Shao Bing co-stars as the cheating husband, and familiar Hong Kong faces like Hui Siu Hung, Shaun Tam, Fan Siu Wong, Emily Kwan, and Hotcha show up for comedic support.

Airline employee Yutong (Wilson Chen) falls in love at first sight when Leslie (Gigi Leung) comes to his counter to check in, but he's too shy to say anything, and chance passes him by. One year later, Leslie shows up at Yutong's house as his new sister-in-law. Since his brother (Shao Bing) is in China, the awkwardly righteous Yutong takes it upon himself to look after Leslie, which consists mostly of giving her earnest talks about drinking less and dressing more conservatively. Though still very much enamored by Leslie, Yutong is too diffident and upright to profess his feelings - until he discovers that his brother is having an affair.

Mei Ah Once In A Summer (VCD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 13.60
First love comes and goes as fleetingly as summer, but the memories stay forever...

Lee Byung Hun (A Bittersweet Life) and Soo Ae (Love Letter) star in this moving romance about ten days of love that spans thirty years of time. The sophomore film from No Manners director Jo Geun Sik, Once in a Summer jumps back and forth from the present day to that fateful summer thirty years ago when the leads first meet. In 1969, Korea was in the midst of great economic changes and political turbulence under the Park Chung Hee regime; set against such chaotic times, the film brings out remarkably simple and genuine sentiments with a heartwarming, yet heartbreaking love story. Jo's lens beautifully captures the contrast between present and past, pastoral countryside and urban Seoul, and Lee Byung Hun convincingly portrays his character both in reckless youth and wizened age.

In the summer of 1969, university student Yoon Suk Young (Lee Byung Hun) goes to the countryside through a volunteer program. Coming from a wealthy but strict family, the laid-back youth revels in the simplicity of rural life, especially when he meets local librarian Jung In (Soo Ae). Suk Young immediately falls in love with the charming Jung In, and in ten days of acquaintance, they form a lifetime of memories. Jung In's cheerful front, however, hides a bitter story; her parents defected to North Korea when she was younger, and she continues to live in the shadow of her parents' actions. When Jung In travels to Seoul with Suk Young, the couple get swept up and torn apart by the political tensions of the time.

Mei Ah Naraka 19 (VCD) (Hong Kong Version)
S$ 12.10
Based on a popular Internet novel, Naraka 19 is a horror thriller with a unique modern twist. For the first time since 49 Days, Gillian Chung of Twins takes on a lead film role as Rain, a student who checks into her university dorm room only to discover that it has a troubled and ominous history. Ten years prior, a student named Gao Yuan (Jones Xu) committed suicide in the room, and the resulting psychic scars run deep. Rain's roommates begin getting text messages on their mobile phones inviting them to play a special game, where they must traverse the 18 levels of Hell in order to reach the fabled "Naraka 19". However, the price for not passing a level is madness or even death! In order to uncover the game's secret, as well as her friends' fates, Rain agrees to join the game. Suddenly, she finds herself in a dark and fantastic world, surrounded by demons and otherworldly creatures, with only her wits and her surprisingly handy mobile phone to point the way home.

The original fiction for Naraka 19 has attained quite a following online, resulting in some concerns from fans about how the film version would turn out. Allaying those fears is director Carol Lai, who follows up her last horror film, the under-appreciated The Third Eye with this new effort, utilizing state-of-the-art CG effects to render the fantastic levels of Hell visited by Rain and her roommates. The effects resemble those from the Pang Brothers hit Re-cycle, with hidden psychological pains bringing grisly imagery and the threat of violence to each character's individual Hell. Backing Gillian Chung is a promising cast, including Patrick Tam (Beast Cops), Shaun Tam (Star Runner), Yan Ng (Whispers and Moans), new EEG singer Vincy, models Maggie Li and Bonnie Xian, and finally Gillian Chung's Twin partner, Charlene Choi, in a very special cameo.

Jingle Ma (Happy Birthday, Tokyo Raiders) bags one for commercial cinema with the buddy action flick Playboy Cops, featuring the photogenic pairing of prolific Hong Kong heartthrob Shawn Yue (Shamo) and less prolific Mainland heartthrob Aloys Chen Kun (The Little Chinese Seamstress) in his first Hong Kong film. Cutting fine form in matching black suits, the two leads forge believable buddy chemistry and handle the Stephen Tung-choreographed action scenes with suitable dexterity and intensity. Despite its popcorn action-comedy guise, Playboy Cops offers as much drama as it does comedy, capped off with a surprisingly tense and hard-hitting finale. Playboy Cops co-stars TVB starlet Linda Chung (Love Is Not All Around) as the love interest, as well as Shaun Tam (Kung Fu Dunk), Wong Yau Nam (Linger), pop singer Ella Kwun, and veteran Danny Lee.

Hot-blooded young cop Michael Mak (Shawn Yue) brings in the criminals, but his disregard for authority and habit of throwing around daddy's money has made him the pariah of the force. Despite his image of being a rich playboy with too much time on his hands, Michael has a sincere passion for the job, and eyes only for ex-girlfriend Lisa (Linda Chung). Michael is determined to win Lisa back, but he's met with competition when wealthy Mainland hunk Lincoln Lin (Aloys Chen) rolls into town to investigate his brother's murder. Quick to throw a punch, Michael clashes with Lincoln immediately because of his apparent history with Lisa, but Lincoln, a former police officer himself, holds his own in fistfight. To speeden Lincoln's departure, Michael decides to team up and help him investigate his brother's case.

An Empress and the Warriors features a Kelly Chen you've never seen before: in armor. The Canto-pop queen heads into battle for this impressive period adventure, in which she stars as Yan Feier, a determined princess who is given control of her troubled, war torn kingdom. Chen trained extensively to handle the role's physical demands, learning to ride a horse and handle a sword for director Tony Ching Siu Tung, who previously handled the action for Zhang Yimou's Hero and House of Flying Daggers, as well as numerous martial arts classics. Chen's co-stars are also top-notch; Leon Lai is her paramour, a kindly doctor with a hidden past, and action superstar Donnie Yen is her childhood friend and toughest warrior - and a man who holds a secret affection for his empress. A lavish tale filled with action and romance, An Empress and the Warriors is the 21st Century answer to the beloved Hong Kong Cinema swordplay classics of old.

Yan Feier (Kelly Chen) is thrust into the role of empress when her father the King is viciously murdered by his own nephew, Wu Ba (Guo Xiao Dong). His treachery unknown to Feier, Wu Ba plots to gain control of the kingdom for himself. Meanwhile, Feier turns to legendary warrior Brother Hu (Donnie Yen) to instruct her in the ways of warfare. But Wu Ba sends assassins after Feier, and she's poisoned by an assassin's dart before being lost in the woods. Her absence throws the kingdom into chaos, and Brother Hu must maintain morale, all the while carrying a hidden love for his missing empress. Meanwhile, Feier is found and nursed back to health by Duan Lanquan (Leon Lai), a doctor who lives in a secluded forest treehouse. Lanquan awakens the woman within the warrior's armor, and given the alternative of a peaceful life without war, Feier must eventually make a difficult choice. Should she choose love, and remain just a woman? Or should she choose her kingdom, and return to being an empress?

Comedy filmmaking maestros Wong Jing and Chiu Yen Ping team-up for Flying Dagger, an over-the-top, all-star, comedy-swordplay extravaganza! Tony Leung Ka Fai and Jimmy Lin are the Big and Little Dagger team, a pair of bounty hunters on the trail of Nine Fox Tails (Jacky Cheung), a rascally bad guy who's supposedly among the worst around. In reality, Nine Fox Tails is a randy scoundrel who's more prone to chasing ladies than perpetrating evil, and he's paired with Flying Cat (Maggie Cheung), his sexy but silly wife, who looks like a woman but acts like a cat. Competing with Big and Little Dagger are Big and Little Bewitchment (Sharla Cheung Man and Gloria Yip), two equally deadly bounty hunters who are miles cuter than their rivals. Cat-scratching, aphrodisiac-flinging fun ensues, with lots of slapstick comedy and flying kung-fu action thrown in to entertain the masses. Veteran action director Ching Siu Tung handles the fight choreography, but it's the Hong Kong megastars ?and their supremely silly performances ?that make Flying Dagger an off-color, offbeat, oddball delight!

His 1979 cult film The Man Who Stole the Sun hit Japanese cinema much like the bomb that its troubled protagonist constructed, while his masterful 1976 debut Seishun no Satsujinsha tells a haunting story of bloody patricide. Adapted from a Nakagami Kenji novel which was itself based on a true story, Seishun no Satsujinsha (a.k.a. Young Murderer) takes the familiar problems of youth apathy, generation conflict, and domestic violence to a shocking conclusion. Hasegawa cuts no corners with the realistic, emotionally brutal scenes of murder, and Mizutani Yutaka and Ichihara Etsuko both give amazing performances.

One morning Jun (Mizutani Yutaka) gets into an angry argument with his father (Uchida Ryohei) over his girlfriend (Harada Mieko) whom his father disapproves of. In a fit of bloody rage, Jun kills his father. He decides to turn himself into the police, but his mother (Ichihara Etsuko) stops him. Eerily calm after the shock, she suggests that they dispose of the body, and then move to another place where no one will know them. When Jun moves the body out of the house, his mother suddenly changes moods again and points a knife at him, as tragedy begets tragedy.
