Top Five Nickelodeon Cartoons that Defined your Childhood

Growing up in Singapore, cartoons were a big part of our childhood. For many of us, after our schooling hours and during weekends, we will park ourselves in front of the television set to tune in to our favourite cartoon programs. Out of the many television channels that broadcast cartoon programs, the go-to channel for most is Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon has a generous number of cartoon programs that have survived the test of time and is still immensely popular amongst children today. Nickelodeon continues to be known as a provider of entertaining cartoon programs and a spreader of joy for children in Singapore. Conveying the right message to children besides making them laugh in the process, Nickelodeon will always be in the hearts of children and adults.

Over the years, Nickelodeon has produced multiple cartoons that have impacted the lives of many Singaporen children. These cartoons not only brought laughs to its kid audiences, they also taught important life lessons such as friendship, working together, et cetera. From their catchy theme songs that we will continue to sing long after the shows have ended to the entertaining storylines that keep young one glued to the TV screens, Nickelodeon Singapore’s cartoons (also known as Nicktoons) are just a few reasons why Nickelodeon’s cartoons manage to garner strong viewership ratings. Here are a few cartoon programs that have become favourites amongst Singaporen children:

CatDog

Literally the title character of the cartoon, CatDog is a cat/dog hybrid that shares the same body. The cat has a smart and devious personality while the dog is naïve and a little slow in the head. Due to these differences, they hate each other and often find themselves arguing, yet at the end of the day, they are brothers, conjoined twins, and lifelong partners. Although the viewers never really found out how they can use a bathroom and whether it is even biologically possible to have a cat/dog hybrid, the show was nevertheless a whopping success.

The adventures (more often misadventures!) that CatDog often finds themselves in bring many laughs to viewers but the true value of this cartoon series lies in the moral lessons that they taught viewers such as brotherly love and learning how to understand and tolerate one another’s weaknesses that really strikes home.

The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius

Created originally as a film, Jimmy Neutron became a three-season series. The series revolves around the central character, Jimmy Neutron, an 11-year-old intelligent boy with a swirly cone hairstyle. Jimmy loves to conduct science experiments and his friends which most of the times would end up badly. Carl and Sheen, his faithful friends will always join him to stop his experiments from destroying the world. Meanwhile, Jimmy’s love-hate relationship with Cindy is also worth to watch. Most importantly Jimmy’s clueless parents and how Jimmy hides his experiments from them is hilarious.

If you want your children to be interested in science and to understand the importance of education from a young age, then this cartoon series should not be missed. The beauty of friendship is also portrayed between Jimmy, Carl, and Sheen, as they work together to prevent Jimmy’s inventions from wreaking havoc.

The Fairly Oddparents

Timmy Turner is not exactly an average kid as the theme song suggests. Having two pet fish that are also his fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda is the highlight of the story. Not exactly perfect fairy godparents as portrayed in many fairy tales, Cosmo and Wanda almost always under-deliver when it comes to granting Timmy’s wishes, leading to absurd situations and hilarious outcomes. This series teaches children to be happy with what they have been granted.

Rugrats

One of the longest-running cartoon programs from Nickelodeon, you must have watched it or at least heard of this series! This 90’s series about the adventures of toddlers ran for over 13 years. The series focuses on a group of toddlers, prominently Tommy, Chuckie, twins Phil and Lil, and Angelica, and their day-to-day lives and common life experiences that become adventures in the babies’ imaginations. In addition to that, Nickelodeon has also created three films based on Rugrats, a spinoff series, and two direct-to-video specials. Rugrats is also a multiple award-winning cartoon series, gaining over 20 awards in its 13-year stint. This cartoon program proves that it is important to inculcate valuable life lessons in children from a young age.

Hey Arnold!

Now, if you have ever watched Hey Arnold, you should know all about the football-headed fourth grader. Arnold life is filled with people though we will never know what exactly happened to his parents. Constantly fighting with Helga, who happens to have a secret crush on him, loitering around with his good friend, Gerald, and trying to get Lila and Ruth’s attention, Arnold taught us what life is and gave us reasons to laugh and think about all the good stuff that we have.
