About Nikon Singapore

Imagine a world without colours, without pictures and imagery. Imagine that everything was in words and absolutely no visuals. Can you picture it? It’s impossible! Images play a pivotal role in information processing. Luckily, one brand brings us technology to access vivid photography. Nikon is the leading maker of photography gear, it markets itself with the distinct yellow and black logo and the catch phrase “I AM NIKON”.

Nikon has three promises:

  • First promise – be “True to the heart”
  • Second promise – to “Ignite the heart”
  • Third promise – to “Invent the heart”

The three heart-promises Nikon endeavours demonstrates the passion of this company in making technology and how it can enrich our lives.

With the dawn of photography, many innovators experimented with optical devices. One such company comprised of three leading Japanese optical manufacturers. The integrated optical company was known as Nippon Kogaku K.K. and later went on to be known as Nikon, the world’s leading camera maker of today. Nikon first experimented with test templates used in binoculars lenses. In 1921, MIKRON 4x and 6x ultra-small-prism binoculars were developed, designed and manufactured by Nikon. In 1932, a revolutionary brand of camera lenses were born, NIKKOR lenses.

Nikkor lens technology by Nikon

NIKKOR lenses are still used today and professional photographers commend its precision and depth of perspective. These neat little lenses were housed in small frames for handheld, quick snapping photography and known as the precision miniature cameras. Between 1950 and 1974, Nikon’s best achievements were focused on telescopes and microscope technology which paves the way for today’s modern lens gadgets.

Today, Nikon is recognised worldwide as a leading camera brand. From the more sophisticated DSLR models to the easy-to-use Nikon COOLPIX models, there’s always a Nikon for everyone. Did you know that each Nikkor lens is polish by a certified Nikon Meister? Each Meister has to go through rigid examinations to prove their skills in order to produce top quality lenses that would befit the top notch quality of the Nikon brand.

A brief explanation of the Nikkor lens making process.

  1. The lens is polished by the Meister in a delicate process in pristine conditions including humidity, room temperature and weather.
  2. Nikon lens are systematically categorised based on the Meister’s skills and so the quality of the lens depends on the Meister’s sharp skills.
  3. Completed Nikkor lenses will then go through stringent quality management inspections that is of the highest global standards.
  4. Finally, a Nikkor lens that is at its full potential is formed through the fusion of the best engineering skills and latest technology.

Nikon cameras, the photography pioneer

An image speaks a thousand words, and it only takes a split second for our minds to process it. Scientists have recently discovered that the human brain takes 13 milliseconds to interpret an image. In a thousandth of a second, we can process a thought based on a visual cue. Thankfully, today we have the blessing of photography to give rich, vivid perspective to our lives.

Photography was not always what it is today. The first photograph, taken by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1826 was a blur of black and white shades. The image captured was that of Niépce’s view from his estate, Le Gras, in Burgundy, France. Towards the 1900’s, photography grew to become a personalised way of documenting historical events, portraying of famous people, and even a lucrative hobby for some who could afford it today.

Nikon has not only made its name in the gadget world with its quality and functionality to snap images and video, it also is a large name in the celebrity world. One celebrity who endorsed Nikon was Ashton Kutcher. Kutcher made a series of commercials portraying him as a playful and somewhat flirtatious character with a Nikon in his hand. In some of the commercials, he runs around taking photos of models and selfies with guests at a wedding and other social functions. Kutcher’s character showed the world a less serious side to Nikon cameras. A couple of other celebrities who got comfy with Nikon cameras include Jennifer Anniston, with her D700 and Lady Gaga, with her Nikon COOLPIX.

Nikon digital lenses

As photography is becoming more personal and easy to access, it has become a hobby with a certain group of society. Contemporary subculture, or more commonly known as “Hipster” culture is fast becoming an outlet for photography. One symbol of hipster culture is the analogue SLR cameras used before the digital era. Hipsters or young millennials who follow elements of contemporary subculture sometimes put to use the older Nikon SLRs. This further enhances Nikon’s reputation for being able to penetrate all groups of society.

No matter what type of camera you’re looking for, Nikon has a model to cater to your photographic desires. Professional photographers generally recommend the DSLR range of Nikon D7000 or D3200 models. Designed for sports and moving wildlife shots, the DSLRs are perfect for capturing high speed movement in crisp, clear and precise details. To further enhance shooting, NIKKOR and Carl Zeiss lenses are ideal. For more basic photography, the COOLPIX model of AW130 waterproof camera is best for those who are always on the go and may be in rough and wet situations. Get comfortable with a COOLPIX camera that is sleek, user-friendly and durable, whilst capturing memories with a click of a button. Be it a hobby or a profession, Nikon cameras are made to excite the user.

Generally, Nikon makes two different types of DSLR camera bodies—those with a built-in focus motor, and those without. The cameras that don't have a built-in focus motor will need a lens that has a focus motor built-in to it. These lenses are called the AF-S lens. While the NIKKOR lenses that do not have a focus motor incorporated into it are just simply named as AF lenses.

Here’s a list of Nikon camera with a built-in focus motor (that can utilize both AF and AF-S lenses):

  • D70
  • D70s
  • D80
  • D90
  • D100
  • D200
  • D300
  • D300s
  • D600
  • D610
  • D700
  • D750
  • D800/D800E
  • D810
  • D7000
  • D7100 D1-series, D2-series, D3-series
  • D4/D4S models

NIKKOR lenses that have the focus motor built into the lens, can be paired with most of the current Nikon camera body, be if the camera body has a focus motor or not, because the Nikkor lens itself controls the focusing function.

Consumer Nikon DSLRs that do not have a built-in focus motor (and therefore need to use AF-S lenses for full autofocus abilities) include:

  • D40
  • D40x
  • D60
  • D3000
  • D3100
  • D3200
  • D3300
  • D5000
  • D5100
  • D5200
  • D5300
  • D5500

However, if you still really want to utilize the AF Nikkor lens with a consumer level camera, it’s still possible. But, you’ll have a limited usability and you will have to manually focus the lens using the focus ring on the lens barrel.
