Decorating your fish tank with colourful decorations can be very aesthetically pleasing especially if you know the correct way to do so. These decorations are made with materials that are specifically designed to be placed into fish tanks and will not deteriorate when submerged in the water for a long period of time. Read below to know the do’s and don’ts of decorating a fish tank.
Consider what substrate you want to use
The substrate of an aquarium refers to the materials used at the bottom of the tank. This is because; it can affect the water chemistry, filtration, and the well-being of the aquarium’s inhabitants.
Depending on the size and shape of your aquarium, there are many options of substrate that you can use such as a sandy bottom, small or large gravel, glass pebbles, corals and so many more.
Wash everything that you place in the tank
Whatever substrate or decoration you pick, make sure it is rinsed with clean water before it is being placed in the tank. There is plenty of dust and debris on it, so it is best to rinse it a couple of times.
Make use of real plants
There are many fake options such as plants to decorate your aquarium with. However, there are benefits that real plants can provide compared to fake plants. Plants can benefit from the waste products from the fish as it needs nitrogen. Moreover, plants need carbon dioxide for their respiration and give off oxygen as a waste product. This is ideal for home tanks as it helps maintain a stable pH as the oxygen level helps with the respiration of your fish.
Types of decorations to avoid
Decorations that are made from concrete or copper, has sharp edges or plastics that have been painted should be avoided. For example, copper and concrete may leach chemicals into your tank possibly poisoning your fishes. On the other hand, sharp edges can injure your fishes, so it should not be put into the tank. No matter how nice a decoration is, the paint from it may flake off and leach into the tank which is also toxic to your fish.
Moreover, you may be tempted to add real corals and driftwood to your tank. It is true that it increases the whole aesthetics of your tank, however, it can be dangerous. Corals and driftwood may be crawling with diseases or parasites that cannot be seen with the naked eye. Not only is it illegal in many countries, it is also disapproved by the community of divers and aquarists.
Overcrowding the tank
At times, you may get overly excited and add every decoration you possibly can into the tank. This is a bad idea as not only does make your tank dirtier quicker; it may also cause aggression between the fishes. Additionally, there are chances of ammonia and nitrate spikes which will cause your fishes to become sick or even die.
