Takita Yojiro's excellent 2003 samurai epic takes place in Meiji-era Japan, when the few remaining samurai were forced to choose sides and fight for either the Emperor or the Tokugawa Shogunate (a time period familiar to American audiences from The Last Samurai, but explored with more complexity and nuance here). Nakai Kiichi stars as Yoshimura Kanichiro, a principled Bushido warrior whose difficult decisions and complicated path are skillfully revealed through flashback.

Popular actor Matsuyama Kenichi (Detroit Metal City) plays a ninja on the run in Blood and Bones director Sai Yoichi's latest film Kamui. Co-scripted by acclaimed screenwriter Kudo Kankuro, the period action film is based on Shirato Sanpei's manga about a fugitive ninja hunted by his former comrades. An exciting blend of fantasy, action, and historical adventure, the film surrounds Matsuyama's lone brooding ninja with spectacular CGI and a star-studded cast that includes Koyuki (Blood: The Last Vampire), Ito Hideaki (Umizaru), veteran Kobayashi Kaoru, Tsuchiya Anna (Sakuran), Ohgo Suzuka (Into the Faraway Sky), Hong Kong star Ekin Cheng (The Storm Warriors), and Yamazaki Tsutomu as the narrator.

Low-ranking ninja Kamui (Matsuyama Kenichi) seeks the freedom to live life as he wishes, but he is bound by the rules of feudal Japan and his clan. He who is born a ninja, dies a ninja. Constantly on the run from other ninjas out for his life, Kamui trusts and cares for no one until fate brings him to a fishing village where he meets fisherman Hanbei (Kobayashi Kaoru) and his family.

What secrets lie deep in the buried forest? Veteran filmmaker Oguri Kohei, the director of such films as The Sting of Death and Sleeping Man, helms The Buried Forest (a.k.a. Umoregi), one of a select group of Japanese films entered in competition at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. With a cinematic look seemingly pulled straight from yesteryear, the film kicks off by focusing on a high school girl named Machi (Karen). To break up the monotony of summer, Machi decides that she and her friends should have some fun and start telling each other stories. Machi begins the game by telling a story about a camel coming to town and, soon after, the other two girls join in, each weaving their own intriguing tales.

In the meantime, the town rebel San-chan (Asano Tadanobu, from Last Life in the Universe and Ichi the Killer) spends his time cruising around town in his red sports car and hanging out with his biker punk pals. Even so, the wildest thing they've ever done is hold up the town's sole convenience store. Then there's the package from Brazil that holds an enormous egg that supposedly came from a beast that's been extinct for years. And what of the old woman (Sakamoto Sumiko) who's being sent to a nursing home while hoping for a cure for her ailments? Even stranger, thanks to a torrential rainfall, the villagers discover an underground cavern containing fossilized trees buried in a volcanic eruption. How will all these seemingly unrelated narrative strands be tied together? Find out in The Buried Forest, Oguri Kohei's beautiful, masterfully crafted motion picture!

Pop singer Otsuka Ai made her acting debut in June 2005 with the drama series Tokyo Friends. Released only on DVD, the five-episode urban drama about four young women was a huge hit despite never being broadcast on television. The final episode of the drama left many loose ends, and fans immediately clamored for a sequel. The story is now continued with Tokyo Friends The Movie!

Small-town girl Rei (Otsuka Ai) moves to the big city to pursue her dreams. In Tokyo, she finds work at a pub and befriends the three other girls who work there, Maki (Kobayashi Mao), Ryoko (Makimura Yoko), and Hirono (Matsumoto Rio). At the invitation of Takashi (Eita, Summer Time Machine Blues), Rei becomes the lead vocalist for the band Sakaban. Takashi and Rei grow closer as they strive for their musical dreams together, but their relationship becomes strained when Takashi moves to a different band and later disappears. Determined to continue singing, Rei and Sakaban slowly make their mark in the music scene. One day, Rei receives news that Takashi was seen in New York and she decides to go look for him...

Is the person by your side really the one you love?

Since the success of films like Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World and Be With You, Japanese filmmakers and moviegoers have been particularly fond of the pure, tragic love story. Director Togashi Shin (Night of the Shooting Stars) offers another touching entry into the romance genre with Tenshi no Tamago, a.k.a. Angel's Egg, starring screen idols Konishi Manami (Udon) and Sawajiri Erika (1 Litre of Tears) and talented young actor Ichihara Hayato (All About Lily Chou-Chou). Based on an award-winning novel by Murayama Yuka, Tenshi no Tamago is a heartwrenching tale of youth and yearning, and following one's heart, no matter the cost.

Nineteen-year-old Ayuta (Ichihara Hayato) is an aspiring artist studying to retake his university entrance exams. His girlfriend Natsuki (Sawajiri Erika) has already entered university. In everyone's eyes, Natsuki and Ayata seem like the perfect couple. One day, Ayuta sees a beautiful woman (Konishi Manami) on the train, and falls in love with her at first sight. A few days later, he visits his hospitalized father, and discovers that the woman on the train is not only his father's new doctor but also Natsuki's older sister, Haruhi. Already scarred from past relationships, Haruhi cannot possibly accept someone eight years younger than her. And yet Ayuta's determination slowly opens her heart to new possibilities...

Renowned director Yamada Yoji brings his acclaimed samurai trilogy to a beautiful close with Love and Honor (a.k.a. Bushi no Ichibun). Like Twilight Samurai and Hidden Blade, Love and Honor is based on the works of Fujisawa Shuhei, and the story follows a familiar arc, portraying a samurai's struggle for honor in the face of harrowing challenges. While his previous two films were helmed by screen veterans Sanada Hiroyuki and Nagase Masatoshi, for Love and Honor Yamada chose pop icon Kimura Takuya as the film's star. The casting initially drew skepticism as, though Kimura had appeared in many television dramas, he had little film experience. Kimura, however, made the role his own, delivering a career-defining performance. Under Yamada's assured hand, the rich aesthetics and restrained acting give way to an increasingly emotional and intense story that culminates with a gripping sword duel. Winning both at the box office and with critics, Love and Honor just might be the best of the trilogy.

Though he is of low rank with modest means, young samurai Mimura Shinnojo (Kimura Takuya) has a fairly happy and stable life with his loving wife Kayo (Dan Rei). All this comes crashing down, however, when Shinnojo, as the lord's food taster, eats poisoned shellfish and becomes blind. Distressed by his inability to support the household, he turns violent and resentful, and even considers ending his own life to redeem his name. At the urging of unsympathetic relatives, Kayo seeks the assistance of captain Shimada Toya (Bando Mitsugoro), who uses his influence to help Shinnojo retain his income and rank. As the rumors begin to get louder, Shinnojo becomes increasingly troubled that he may be losing his wife and honor to another man...

The three-disc Special Edition comes with a booklet, a swordplay instruction guide, and 180 minutes of special features including:

After a series of period films, 78-year-old legendary director Yamada Yoji returns to a contemporary story for the first time in a decade with About Her Brother, the closing film of the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. Stars Yoshinaga Sayuri (Year One in the North) and Tsurube Shofukutei (Dear Doctor) reunite with Yamada after Kabei - Our Mother in this unabashedly old-fashioned melodrama about family love and the sacrifices made in its name.

Ginko (Yoshinaga Sayuri) seems to be living the good life: She's the respectable owner of a neighborhood drug store in Tokyo, and her daughter Kaharu (Aoi Yu) is about to get married to a doctor. However, Koharu's wedding day also brings homes Ginko's younger brother Tetsuro (Tsurube Shofukutei), a failed actor and a hard drinker who shows up causing trouble. Having covered for him all her life, Ginko is ready to disown her burdensome younger brother, but some things are easier said than done.

Blu-ray Edition comes with Berlin International Film Festival screening documentary and trailers.

Shochiku Home Video The Twilight Samurai (Blu-ray) (Japan Version)
    S$ 61.80
The first film in Yamada Yoji's acclaimed samurai trilogy, The Twilight Samurai presents a touching cinematic masterpiece about love and agony starring Sanada Hiroyuki (The Last Samurai) and Miyazawa Rie. Yamada Yoji has made every effort to display the complexities of the ancient Japanese culture and the art of sword fighting, which becomes obvious in this monumental movie whose plot is based on three short stories from popular novelist Fujisawa Shuhei.

Sanada Hiroyuki plays a swordsman who has to take care of his two daughters after his wife has passed away from lung disease. As he does not engage in drinking and other merry activities, he is sneeringly nicknamed "Twilight Samurai" by his peers. Miyazawa Rie portrays his love interest, a beautiful woman with a strong will from the family of his best friend. The two protagonists become mutually attracted, but fate does not seem to be on their sides.

    S$ 91.80
Japanese rock star Gackt makes his Hollywood film debut in Bunraku, an exhilarating action spectacular from writer-director Guy Moshe. Inspired by the Japanese traditional art of puppet theater (which is what the film's title refers to), Bunraku is an inventive, audacious mix of spaghetti westerns, chabara cinema, and neo-noir. In addition to Gackt as a lone swordsman, Bunraku also features an impressive cast of Hollywood stars, including Josh Harnett (I Come With the Rain) as a cowboy seeking revenge, Woody Harrelson (2012) as a bartender, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as a villainous crime boss and Demi Moore (Ghost) as a dangerous femme fatale.

In a future post-war world, guns have been outlawed, and people can only fight each other with primitive weapons like swords. One day, a nameless drifter (Josh Harnett) and a samurai (Gackt) arrive at a city looking to settle their respective scores with the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman), the crime lord that rules the city. The two are brought together by a bartender (Woody Harrelson), who always has some wisdom to offer. With other groups of people with their own agendas arriving in town, an violent battle for the control of the city is about to begin.

This edition includes the film on both Blu-ray and DVD. It also comes with a bonus DVD containing an interview with Gackt and trailers.

This film witnesses the birth of Quill, his growth, and how Quill becomes a guide dog for the blind. How will the adorable Quill deal with his first life and death separation?

Quill is a Labrador Retriever, a breed of dog that has a great tradition of becoming guide dogs for the blind. Quill is distinguished from his brother and sisters with a bird-like birthmark on his body. It did not take long for Quill to be selected for training as a guide dog, and the first "master" Quill is sent to is Mr. Watanabe. Watanabe is a stubborn man, who believes that a walking cane is much more reliable than a guide dog. But after spending time with each other, Watanabe is moved by Quill's selfless love for him. These good times are not to last however, and Quill has to learn the pain of separation for the first time...

Directed by Sai Yoichi, Quill is the film adaptation of the bestselling novel. The story is simple yet extremely moving. It'll surely move you to tears, all you dog-lovers out there!

Fashion photographer and music video director Kiriya Kazuaki's long awaited first film, set in a stunning retro-futuristic world, is a visual and philosophical tour de force.

An updated version of an animated television series from Tatsunoko Pro made in the early 1970s, Casshern is a classic tale of good vs. evil. The film is set in the future with planet Earth divided into two opposing alliances. After a long and bitter war, the Greater Eastern Federation triumphed over Europa to rule the Eurasian continent. However, the victory is a hollow one. The war has left the planet a wasteland, ravaged by chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, and its inhabitants are weak and susceptible to every pestilence and new disease that appears.

With hope running out for the survival of the human race, a geneticist named Dr. Azuma proposes a neo-cell treatment through which he can rejuvenate the human body and potentially save mankind. The success of his research is critical to him on a personal level as well, as his disease-stricken wife Midori is growing weaker each day.

One day, a freak bolt of lightning sends Azuma's neo-cell cloning experiment haywire, and an army of superhuman androids (Shinzo Ningen) are unleashed on the world. The military attacks and kills most of them, but some survive, taking Midori hostage and employing a robot army to wage war on the humans in an effort to wipe them off the face of the earth. As options run out, Tetsuya, Azuma's son who had been killed in combat, is reborn through his father's neo-cell technology as the hero Casshern. Will he be able to save the world, or is it too late?

This version includes 2 special discs containing the making-of and interviews with the director and cast.

A cup of coffee is enough to transform your mood - at least it works for Yoko (Yo Hitoto) in Hou Hsiao Hsien's Cafe Lumiere. Yoko finds her peace in enjoying coffee with her friend Hajime (Asano Tadanobu). With a cup of coffee in her hands, she can retreat from her own problems and stay calm, even for just a while, so that she will have the courage to move on to another stage in her life.

Yoko is a freelance writer researching on the Taiwan-born Japanese singer Jiang Ewn-ye. She met Hajime, the owner of a second-hand bookstore, while doing research at his shop. Since then the two have spent a good deal of quality time together in coffee shops. One day Yoko discovers that she is pregnant and she announces to her parents, whom she has not seen for a while, that she has decided to become an unwed mother. Her parents are worried, but Hajime feels even worse for he cannot express his love for Yoko. Meanwhile, Yoko's research on Jiang Ewn-ye has inspired her to reexamine her relationships with her family, Hajime, the baby, and many others.

This film is a tribute to Japanese master Ozu Yasujiro to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birthday. The spirit of Ozu's films, especially Tokyo Story, can easily be felt in Coffee Lumiere. Hou Hsiao Hsien admits that he has been thinking of how Ozu would have shot a film in today's Japan. Cafe Lumiere has been selected for numerous film festivals.

Now each Cafe Lumiere DVD comes with a bonus 180 minute DVD which contains:
    1. Footage on Yoko's life and outdoor shooting in Hokkaido, edited by Hou himself.
    2. Interview with Asano Tadanobu and Hitoto Yo
    3. Interview with Hou Hsiao Hsien and the making of the film
    4. The French documentary Metro Lumiere (with Japanese subtitles)
    5. Footage on the Venice Film Festival and the film premiere
