Shochiku Home Video The Land of Hope (Blu-ray) (Japan Version)
S$ 77.30
Immediately following the March 11 disaster in northeast Japan, director Sono Sion (Love Exposure) headed to the disaster zone to film Himizu, a bleak youth drama that concludes on a positive outlook for the future. Sono continues that outlook for post-disaster Japan in The Land of Hope, possibly the filmmaker's most optimistic film yet. Once again shot in the disaster zone in northeast Japan, the somber drama looks at life after an earthquake in a fictional prefecture sets of another nuclear crisis. While the film's setting is fictional, Sono's depiction of nuclear paranoia and unwavering optimism is clearly a reflection of post-Fukushima Japan. The Land of Hope may be restrained compared to Sono's previous films, but it remains a powerful, emotional story of nation standing tall in the face of disasters. The Ono and the Suzuki families are neighbors living in a rural town of Nagashima Prefecture (a fictional place). One day, a strong earthquake strikes the area, causing an explosion at the nearby nuclear power plant. While the Suzukis decide to evacuate to the shelter, Ono Yasuhiko (Osao Natsuyagi) is determined to stay with his senile wife in his family home, which lies right behind the mandatory evacuation line. When Yasuhiko's son Yoichi (Murakami Jun) discovers that his wife Izumi (Kagurazaka Izumi) is pregnant, Yasuhiko forces them to evacuate, leaving the two elders all alone. Despite being away from the evacuation zone, Izumi remains paranoid of the nuclear fallout and its effects on her soon-to-be-born child.

One woman discovers the destructive power of the internet and social media in The Snow White Murder Case, based on a novel by Confessions author Minato Kanae. Directed by Nakamura Yoshihiro (Fish Story, Golden Slumbers), the mystery-drama deconstructs a seemingly open-and-shut case involving the murder of a beautiful cosmetics company employee by a "plain-looking" co-worker, played by Inoue Mao. Adopting a Rashomon-style narrative structure, Nakamura and screenwriter Hayashi Tamio (Golden Slumbers) show the devastating effects of internet rumors and how they can play with our perception of the truth. In addition to Inoue, The Snow White Murder Case also stars Ayano Go (Rurouni Kenshin) as a Twitter-obsessed reporter and popular model Nanao (Last Cinderella) as the beautiful murder victim. A beautiful woman (Nanao) working for a cosmetics company has been brutally murdered, but the police have been secretive about the details of the case. One day, ambitious television news director Akahoshi (Ayano Go) gets a call from a friend who works inside the company and learns about the rivalry between the victim and Shirono (Inoue Mao), a "plain-looking" employee who seems to have plenty of motives to commit murder. Akahoshi's subsequent investigative report creates a huge stir on social media, as netizens quickly identify the secret identity behind the "Miss S" in the report. Despite not having been officially sought out by the police, Shirono has already been persecuted publicly as the killer. What is the truth behind the case? Where is Shirono? This edition comes with a booklet featuring an essay by Minato Kanae, as well as a bonus DVD containing making of, stage events and trailers.

Shochiku Home Video The Twilight Samurai (Blu-ray) (Japan Version)
S$ 63.40
The first film in Yamada Yoji's acclaimed samurai trilogy, The Twilight Samurai presents a touching cinematic masterpiece about love and agony starring Sanada Hiroyuki (The Last Samurai) and Miyazawa Rie. Yamada Yoji has made every effort to display the complexities of the ancient Japanese culture and the art of sword fighting, which becomes obvious in this monumental movie whose plot is based on three short stories from popular novelist Fujisawa Shuhei. Sanada Hiroyuki plays a swordsman who has to take care of his two daughters after his wife has passed away from lung disease. As he does not engage in drinking and other merry activities, he is sneeringly nicknamed "Twilight Samurai" by his peers. Miyazawa Rie portrays his love interest, a beautiful woman with a strong will from the family of his best friend. The two protagonists become mutually attracted, but fate does not seem to be on their sides.

From 1969 to 1995, Yamada Yoji directed an iconic series of films titled Otoko wa Tsurai yo (a.k.a. It's Tough Being a Man) about a traveling salesman and his never-ending difficulties with love. The director shows that relationships don't get any easier with time in his 2016 film What a Wonderful Family! (a.k.a. Kazoku wa Tsurai yo). Yamada reunites the cast of Tokyo Family including Hashizume Isao, Yoshiyuki Kazuko, Tsumabuki Satoshi, Aoi Yu, Nishimura Masahiko, Natsukawa Yui, Hayashiya Shozo and Nakajima Tomoko for an astute, good-humored look into the dynamics of the modern family. Married for 50 years, Shuzo (Hashizume Isao) and Tomiko (Yoshiyuki Kazuko) live with their sons Konosuke (Nishimura Masahiko) and Shota (Tsumabuki Satoshi) as well as their daughter-in-law (Natsukawa Yui) and their grandchildren. With so many people under one roof, the house is constantly bustling with bicker and banter. On Tomiko's latest birthday, which Shuzo has as usual forgotten, she calmly asks him for a present: divorce.

Shochiku Home Video Three Stories of Love (Blu-ray) (Japan Version)

Seven years after All Around Us, acclaimed writer-director Hashiguchi Ryosuke makes a welcome return with the raw and realistic human drama Three Stories of Love, which was nominated for Best Film at the 10th Asian Film Awards and selected as the Best Film of 2015 by the 89th Kinema Junpo Awards. Working with a main cast of mostly no-name actors selected through workshop auditions, Hashiguchi offers an acute examination of love, loneliness and alienation. As indicated by the title, the film weaves together a trio of stories about a grieving man (Shinohara Atsushi) overwhelmed by the murder of his wife, an elitist gay lawyer (Ikeda Ryo) with a miserable love life, and a housewife (Narushima Toko) stuck with an indifferent partner and an over-bearing mother-in-law.

Directed by Shimoyama Ten, the dazzling 2005 film Shinobi centers on the drama resulting from the war between two ninja clans in the early part of the Tokugawa era. In the film, Nakama Yukie portrays Oboro, the granddaughter of Ogen (Lily), the respected Iga clan matriarch, while Odagiri Jo plays Gennosuke, the son of Danjo Koga (Minoru Terada), the powerful Koga clan leader. While living deep within the mountains, the two ninja clans have honed their skills to superhuman levels. Unfortunately, the clans do not get along and are forbidden by imperial decree from sharing their techniques with each other. Viewing the two ninja clans as a threat to his scheme for total domination, the nefarious Nankobo Tenkai (Ishibashi Renji) plots to intensify the rivalry between the two clans. Nakobo creates a contest in which the clans are forced to choose five of their best warriors to participate. The battle, however, isn't just a friendly contest, it's a duel to the death! Early in the film, Oboro and Gennosuke meet and fall in love unaware of their clan ties, so when they are both selected to compete they are surprised to discover the truth about one another's identities. Gennosuke initially refuses to participate, but is forced to make an appearance when his compatriots start dropping like flies. The combatants in this contest are not your run-of-the-mill ninja warriors, each has powers beyond that of mortal men. There's the face-changing Saemon Kisaragi (Kinoshita Hoka), the limb-extending Yashamaru (Sakaguchi Taku), the poisonous Kagero (Kurotani Tomoka), and the all-seeing Tenzan Yakushi (Shiina Kippei) just to name a few! Thanks to a great romance plot, breathtaking special effects, and spectacular action choreography, Shinobi offers a one-of-a-kind ninja film that must be seen to be believed! The Igaban First Press Limited Edition of Shinobi comes with five Igaban character cards, plus the Igaban bonus disc, containing the following special features:Making-of documentary (60 minutes) Interviews with Yukie Nakama and Joe Odagiri Footage from the Japan premieres and press conference

This film witnesses the birth of Quill, his growth, and how Quill becomes a guide dog for the blind. How will the adorable Quill deal with his first life and death separation? Quill is a Labrador Retriever, a breed of dog that has a great tradition of becoming guide dogs for the blind. Quill is distinguished from his brother and sisters with a bird-like birthmark on his body. It did not take long for Quill to be selected for training as a guide dog, and the first "master" Quill is sent to is Mr. Watanabe. Watanabe is a stubborn man, who believes that a walking cane is much more reliable than a guide dog. But after spending time with each other, Watanabe is moved by Quill's selfless love for him. These good times are not to last however, and Quill has to learn the pain of separation for the first time... Directed by Sai Yoichi, Quill is the film adaptation of the bestselling novel. The story is simple yet extremely moving. It'll surely move you to tears, all you dog-lovers out there!

Shochiku Home Video Sabu (Japan Version)
S$ 52.20
One of Miike Takashi's few period films, the 2002 film Sabu is another testament to the maverick filmmaker's versatile repertoire. A tame offering by Miike standards - though still boasting its fair share of blood - Sabu eschews the bombastic violence and twisted characters that some viewers may have come to expect from the director, and tells a compelling tale of friendship and betrayal in the Tokugawa era. Interestingly, Sabu is actually a television movie, but it was shot on proper film usually used for theatrical features, and boasts the A-list casting of Fujiwara Tatsuya (Death Note) and Tsumabuki Satoshi (Nada Sou Sou, Waterboys). With handsome art direction and costumes, steady camerawork, and a haunting score, the film is an effective and moody period piece that should appeal to a wide audience while still satisfying Miike aficionados. Though poor, Eiji (Fujiwara Tatsuya) and Sabu (Tsumabuki Satoshi) don't have much to complain about, living out normal, honest lives as laborers in Tokugawa Japan. Eiji is framed for stealing, and exiled to an island prison camp. Thrown into a rough and brutal environment, he must fight each and everyday to survive. Life on the island slowly transforms him, and his only motivation for survival is revenge on those who brought him to this existence. Sabu tries everything he can to help free Eiji, but when the friends finally meet again, it is a completely different man that stands before Sabu.

A cup of coffee is enough to transform your mood - at least it works for Yoko (Yo Hitoto) in Hou Hsiao Hsien's Cafe Lumiere. Yoko finds her peace in enjoying coffee with her friend Hajime (Asano Tadanobu). With a cup of coffee in her hands, she can retreat from her own problems and stay calm, even for just a while, so that she will have the courage to move on to another stage in her life. Yoko is a freelance writer researching on the Taiwan-born Japanese singer Jiang Ewn-ye. She met Hajime, the owner of a second-hand bookstore, while doing research at his shop. Since then the two have spent a good deal of quality time together in coffee shops. One day Yoko discovers that she is pregnant and she announces to her parents, whom she has not seen for a while, that she has decided to become an unwed mother. Her parents are worried, but Hajime feels even worse for he cannot express his love for Yoko. Meanwhile, Yoko's research on Jiang Ewn-ye has inspired her to reexamine her relationships with her family, Hajime, the baby, and many others. This film is a tribute to Japanese master Ozu Yasujiro to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birthday. The spirit of Ozu's films, especially Tokyo Story, can easily be felt in Coffee Lumiere. Hou Hsiao Hsien admits that he has been thinking of how Ozu would have shot a film in today's Japan. Cafe Lumiere has been selected for numerous film festivals. Now each Cafe Lumiere DVD comes with a bonus 180 minute DVD which contains: 1. Footage on Yoko's life and outdoor shooting in Hokkaido, edited by Hou himself. 2. Interview with Asano Tadanobu and Hitoto Yo 3. Interview with Hou Hsiao Hsien and the making of the film 4. The French documentary Metro Lumiere (with Japanese subtitles) 5. Footage on the Venice Film Festival and the film premiere
