Director Yamada Yoji reunites with Yoshinaga Sayuri, the star of About Her Brother and Kabei - Our Mother, for the poignant drama Nagasaki: Memories of My Son set in postwar Nagasaki. The veteran actress plays a midwife who lost her son three years ago during the atomic bombing. On the day she tells herself it's time to let him go, her son suddenly appears again to reminisce about their times together. Arashi member Ninomiya Kazunari (Letters from Iwo Jima) won Best Actor at the 39th Japan Academy Prize for his portrayal of the son. Kuroki Haru (Little House) and Asano Tadanobu (Kabei - Our Mother) also co-star in this moving examination of familial love, the pain of loss, and the indelible effects of war.

Based on the same Ooka Shohei novel that Ichikawa Kon adapted for his 1959 classic, Tsukamoto Shinya's Fires on the Plain is a relentlessly grim and gruesome vision of the horrors of war. Screened in competition at the 2014 Venice Film Festival, the film is set around the circumstances of Japan's retreat from the Philippines in the final days of World War II when the war had been all but lost. The maverick director himself stars as a conscripted soldier suffering from tuberculosis. Cast out by his commanding officer, he is forced to fend for himself in the Philippine jungle where he encounters one hellish trial after another in between the fire of advancing American soldiers and local guerrillas as well as the rapidly declining state of his health and mind.

One woman discovers the destructive power of the internet and social media in The Snow White Murder Case, based on a novel by Confessions author Minato Kanae. Directed by Nakamura Yoshihiro (Fish Story, Golden Slumbers), the mystery-drama deconstructs a seemingly open-and-shut case involving the murder of a beautiful cosmetics company employee by a "plain-looking" co-worker, played by Inoue Mao. Adopting a Rashomon-style narrative structure, Nakamura and screenwriter Hayashi Tamio (Golden Slumbers) show the devastating effects of internet rumors and how they can play with our perception of the truth. In addition to Inoue, The Snow White Murder Case also stars Ayano Go (Rurouni Kenshin) as a Twitter-obsessed reporter and popular model Nanao (Last Cinderella) as the beautiful murder victim. A beautiful woman (Nanao) working for a cosmetics company has been brutally murdered, but the police have been secretive about the details of the case. One day, ambitious television news director Akahoshi (Ayano Go) gets a call from a friend who works inside the company and learns about the rivalry between the victim and Shirono (Inoue Mao), a "plain-looking" employee who seems to have plenty of motives to commit murder. Akahoshi's subsequent investigative report creates a huge stir on social media, as netizens quickly identify the secret identity behind the "Miss S" in the report. Despite not having been officially sought out by the police, Shirono has already been persecuted publicly as the killer. What is the truth behind the case? Where is Shirono?

What secrets lie deep in the buried forest? Veteran filmmaker Oguri Kohei, the director of such films as The Sting of Death and Sleeping Man, helms The Buried Forest (a.k.a. Umoregi), one of a select group of Japanese films entered in competition at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. With a cinematic look seemingly pulled straight from yesteryear, the film kicks off by focusing on a high school girl named Machi (Karen). To break up the monotony of summer, Machi decides that she and her friends should have some fun and start telling each other stories. Machi begins the game by telling a story about a camel coming to town and, soon after, the other two girls join in, each weaving their own intriguing tales. In the meantime, the town rebel San-chan (Asano Tadanobu, from Last Life in the Universe and Ichi the Killer) spends his time cruising around town in his red sports car and hanging out with his biker punk pals. Even so, the wildest thing they've ever done is hold up the town's sole convenience store. Then there's the package from Brazil that holds an enormous egg that supposedly came from a beast that's been extinct for years. And what of the old woman (Sakamoto Sumiko) who's being sent to a nursing home while hoping for a cure for her ailments? Even stranger, thanks to a torrential rainfall, the villagers discover an underground cavern containing fossilized trees buried in a volcanic eruption. How will all these seemingly unrelated narrative strands be tied together? Find out in The Buried Forest, Oguri Kohei's beautiful, masterfully crafted motion picture!

Directed by Shimoyama Ten, the dazzling 2005 film Shinobi centers on the drama resulting from the war between two ninja clans in the early part of the Tokugawa era. In the film, Nakama Yukie portrays Oboro, the granddaughter of Ogen (Lily), the respected Iga clan matriarch, while Odagiri Jo plays Gennosuke, the son of Danjo Koga (Minoru Terada), the powerful Koga clan leader. While living deep within the mountains, the two ninja clans have honed their skills to superhuman levels. Unfortunately, the clans do not get along and are forbidden by imperial decree from sharing their techniques with each other. Viewing the two ninja clans as a threat to his scheme for total domination, the nefarious Nankobo Tenkai (Ishibashi Renji) plots to intensify the rivalry between the two clans. Nakobo creates a contest in which the clans are forced to choose five of their best warriors to participate. The battle, however, isn't just a friendly contest, it's a duel to the death! Early in the film, Oboro and Gennosuke meet and fall in love unaware of their clan ties, so when they are both selected to compete they are surprised to discover the truth about one another's identities. Gennosuke initially refuses to participate, but is forced to make an appearance when his compatriots start dropping like flies. The combatants in this contest are not your run-of-the-mill ninja warriors, each has powers beyond that of mortal men. There's the face-changing Saemon Kisaragi (Kinoshita Hoka), the limb-extending Yashamaru (Sakaguchi Taku), the poisonous Kagero (Kurotani Tomoka), and the all-seeing Tenzan Yakushi (Shiina Kippei) just to name a few! Thanks to a great romance plot, breathtaking special effects, and spectacular action choreography, Shinobi offers a one-of-a-kind ninja film that must be seen to be believed! The Kogaban First Press Limited Edition of Shinobi comes with five Kogaban character cards, plus the Kogaban bonus disc, containing the following special features: Visual effects development documentary (30 mins) Action featurette (5 mins) Art direction featurette (5 mins) Weapons featurette Press conference (10 mins) TV spots and trailers

First introduced to Japan in 1872, baseball has a long tradition in the land of the rising sun, as evident in the recent influx of talented Japanese players into the Major League. Even during the World War II period when baseball was officially banned, the Japanese government could not stop the pastime from continuing in streets and backyards. Based on popular novelist Yokoyama Hideo's same-titled work, Deguchi no Nai Umi, a.k.a. Sea Without Exit, sets a young man's love for baseball against the turbulence of 1940s wartime Japan. The film's screenplay is written by renowned director Yamada Yoji (The Twilight Samurai) and Tomikawa Motofumi. In the director's chair is Sasabe Kyoshi, who had adapted Yokoyama's Hanochi to great success in 2004. Deguchi no Nai Umi also marks the film debut of kabuki superstar Ichikawa Ebizo XI. Hailing from Japan's most prestigious kabuki acting family, Ichikawa Ebizo XI broke from tradition to star in the samurai television drama Musashi in 2003. Now the young actor extends his aura to the silver screen. Also starring Ueno Juri (Summertime Machine Blues), Shioya Shun (Pacchigi!), and Iseya Yusuke (Memories of Matsuko), Deguchi no Nai Umi shines a light on a dark period, raising deep questions with simple sentiments. After winning the national high school championship, young pitcher Namiki Koji (Ichikawa Ebizo XI) enters university in hopes of continuing his baseball dreams. After he injures his elbows, Koji determinedly works on a new "slowball" pitch that will allow him to keep playing. However, World War II soon breaks out, and Koji and his teammates' dreams are swept aside. Enlisted into the military, Koji trains for the suicide submarine mission that awaits him. But even in his darkest hours, Koji never forgets about his slowball. This 2-disc Special Edition release comes with a reader guide, a postcard, and the following extras: Disc 1 Teaser Trailers and TV Spot Photo Gallery Disc 2 Ichikawa Ebizo XI Discusses Deguchi no Nai Umi Kabuki Presentation (August 28, 2006) Cast and Crew Interview Ginza Musical Instruments Event Submarine Virtual Gallery

A clan leader is on a frantic race against time in Samurai Hustle, a hit period comedy from director Motoki Katsuhide (Gegege no Kitaro). Sasaki Kuranosuke (20th Century Boys) plays Naito the clan leader of a small village that is rumored to have a hidden gold mine. One day, Naito is ordered to do Sankin-kotai, which involves going on a journey to pay a visit to the shogun in Edo, within five days instead of the usual eight days. With little money and little time, Naito must use his wits to complete the costly mission or risk losing his land. Not based on any existing material, the original screenplay by Dobashi Akihiro won the Kido Award, a prize dedicated to recognize new screenwriters, in 2011. This edition includes making of, stage events, trailers and other bonus material.

A cup of coffee is enough to transform your mood - at least it works for Yoko (Yo Hitoto) in Hou Hsiao Hsien's Cafe Lumiere. Yoko finds her peace in enjoying coffee with her friend Hajime (Asano Tadanobu). With a cup of coffee in her hands, she can retreat from her own problems and stay calm, even for just a while, so that she will have the courage to move on to another stage in her life. Yoko is a freelance writer researching on the Taiwan-born Japanese singer Jiang Ewn-ye. She met Hajime, the owner of a second-hand bookstore, while doing research at his shop. Since then the two have spent a good deal of quality time together in coffee shops. One day Yoko discovers that she is pregnant and she announces to her parents, whom she has not seen for a while, that she has decided to become an unwed mother. Her parents are worried, but Hajime feels even worse for he cannot express his love for Yoko. Meanwhile, Yoko's research on Jiang Ewn-ye has inspired her to reexamine her relationships with her family, Hajime, the baby, and many others. This film is a tribute to Japanese master Ozu Yasujiro to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birthday. The spirit of Ozu's films, especially Tokyo Story, can easily be felt in Coffee Lumiere. Hou Hsiao Hsien admits that he has been thinking of how Ozu would have shot a film in today's Japan. Cafe Lumiere has been selected for numerous film festivals. Now each Cafe Lumiere DVD comes with a bonus 180 minute DVD which contains: 1. Footage on Yoko's life and outdoor shooting in Hokkaido, edited by Hou himself. 2. Interview with Asano Tadanobu and Hitoto Yo 3. Interview with Hou Hsiao Hsien and the making of the film 4. The French documentary Metro Lumiere (with Japanese subtitles) 5. Footage on the Venice Film Festival and the film premiere

Back in 2010, Nakamura Yoshihiro directed A Boy and His Samurai, a comedy about a samurai who time travels to the present day. The eclectic filmmaker best known for mysteries likes The Inerasable and The Snow White Murder Case goes full period drama with The Magnificent Nine. Based on a novel by Isoda Michifumi, the ensemble comedy-drama rounds up both fresh faces and Nakamura's past leads to form his most star-studded cast yet that includes Abe Sadao, Eita, Tsumabuki Satoshi, Takeuchi Yuko, Matsuda Ryuhei, Yamazaki Tsutomu, Yuda Chibai and even Olympic gold medal figure skater Hanyu Yuzuru in his acting debut. Juzaburo (Abe Sadao) lives in an impoverished rural town where most of the residents struggle to get by due to the heavy taxes levied by the local government. Tea grower Tokuheiji (Eita), who has recently moved back to town, suggests loaning a large sum to the government and then using the interest to help the townspeople. Though Tokuheiji made the remark in jest, Juzaburo takes the idea to heart and puts the plan into action by pooling resources with other more well-off residents to raise money for the loan. As word spreads, more people join the scheme, including Juzaburo's estranged younger brother (Tsumabuki Satoshi), but the plan begins to balloon out of his control.

The crime lies in the mind in the twist-filled sci-fi suspense The Top Secret: Murder in Mind from Rurouni Kenshin director Otomo Keishi. Based on Shimizu Reiko's manga Himitsu - Top Secret, the intriguing thriller is set in the late 21st century when advanced MRI technology allows the police to retrieve memories from the brains of even the dead. Ikuta Toma (Grasshopper) and Okada Masaki (Space Brothers) team up as the aloof genius chief and hot-headed rookie investigator of Department 9, a special forensics team that makes use of the brain scanner for criminal investigation. Delving into the minds and memories of victims and criminals, they struggle to crack unsolved cases while also navigating the grave ethical implications and psychological fallout of their actions. With Department 9 in danger of being shut down, the team takes on their possibly final case: a death row prisoner convicted of killing his family. They go deep into his mind to find the root of murder, but getting out may not be so easy. Kikkawa Koji (Rurouni Kenshin), Matsuzaka Tori (Mozu The Movie), Kuriyama Chiaki (Library Wars), Lily Franky (Like Father, Like Son), Shiina Kippei (Assassination Classroom) and Omori Nao (Parasyte) also co-star in the mind-bending mystery.

Japanese rock star Gackt makes his Hollywood film debut in Bunraku, an exhilarating action spectacular from writer-director Guy Moshe. Inspired by the Japanese traditional art of puppet theater (which is what the film's title refers to), Bunraku is an inventive, audacious mix of spaghetti westerns, chabara cinema, and neo-noir. In addition to Gackt as a lone swordsman, Bunraku also features an impressive cast of Hollywood stars, including Josh Harnett (I Come With the Rain) as a cowboy seeking revenge, Woody Harrelson (2012) as a bartender, Ron Perlman (Hellboy) as a villainous crime boss and Demi Moore (Ghost) as a dangerous femme fatale. In a future post-war world, guns have been outlawed, and people can only fight each other with primitive weapons like swords. One day, a nameless drifter (Josh Harnett) and a samurai (Gackt) arrive at a city looking to settle their respective scores with the Woodcutter (Ron Perlman), the crime lord that rules the city. The two are brought together by a bartender (Woody Harrelson), who always has some wisdom to offer. With other groups of people with their own agendas arriving in town, an violent battle for the control of the city is about to begin. This edition includes trailers.
