How Sony became from the meaning of ‘sound’ to one of the most heard sounds in the world
The origin of the Sony name came from the marriage of ‘SONUS’, which is original Latin for sound and ‘SONNY’ that means small size or youthful boy. The reason why it was chosen was that it was easy to pronounce in any language.
In May 1946, Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo K. K. (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation) a.k.a Totsuko was established in Nihonbashi as a manufacturer of telecommunications and measuring equipment. In 1955, after crucial innovative inventions of the tape recorder prototype and Japan’s first PNP alloy-type transistor and germanium diode, it was decided that all products under Totsuko to use the SONY logo, which then is renamed to Sony Corporation in 1958.
Following the establishment of Sony Corporation of America (SONAM) in the United States in 1960, Sony became the first Japanese company to offer shares in the United States in the form of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) on the OTC market of the New York Stock Exchange in 1961.
Sony became the world’s first manufacturer of the CD player, CDP-101, in 1982. Following that, Sony launched the high definition video system (HDVS) and the Portable CD player (which was later called the ‘Discman’) in 1984.
Sony acquired the records group CBS Records Inc. which was then renamed Sony Music Entertainment Inc. in January 1991.
In November 1993, the establishment of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. marked the start of a venture into the computer entertainment industry for the company and revolutionary innovations for the consumers. This was then followed with the establishment of Sony Communication Network Corporation and the formation of basic specifications of new industry format for high-density optical disc which the DVD.
In the month of October, almost consecutively, Sony China was established and the still camera “Cybershot” DSC-F1 was launched.
Sony then moved to establish Sony Marketing Co., Ltd. in 1997 which was followed by a number of developments and launches. In May, Sony developed the “Digital Reality Creation” which is a technology to create highly-realistic 4x picture resolution based on standard television signals through the usage of the company’s exclusive digital signal processing algorithm. In June, Sony introduced the Corporate Executive Officer System and in July, the home-use PC “VAIO” and flat CRT “WEGA” series.
In February 2001, the world’s largest 13-inch, full-colour organic EL display, XEL1, was developed. Sony then established a bank in Japan, its own EMCS (Excise Movement and Control System) and the Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications.
Sony absorbed AIWA by merger in 2002 and then launched the world’s first next-generation high capacity optical disc “Blu-ray Disc” recorder BDZ-S77.
It was Sony that developed and introduced the industry’s first LCD device to meet advanced digital cinema DCI-recommended specifications of 4K (4906H x 2160V) through its new 4K SXRD high resolution LCD panel, establishing itself as the benchmark of global standard for digital cinema projectors. This was then followed by the establishment of Sony BMG Music Entertainment in August 2004. In September, the world’s first mercury-free button-shaped silver-oxide battery was developed and commercialized.
Sony and Samsung join-ventured in manufacturing 8th generation amorphous TFT LCD panels, establishing the S-LCD Corporation. This was followed by the world’s first Blu-ray Disc drive Notebook PC (VAIO typeA) in June 2006.
In 2007, Sony relocates to a new building called “Sony City” in Osaki. This opened up new opportunities like the production of the world’s first OLED TV, the world’s smallest full HD “Handycam” HDR-TG1 in 2008 and a joint-venture with Sharp to produce and sell large-sized LCD panels and modules. In September 2009, Sony Group reinvents its brand message to ‘make.believe”. In the same year, Sony managed to make an agreement on selected media rights for the world’s first 3D FIFAF World Cup.
From sounds to games to visual recorders and projectors, Sony has it all
Having made its name for being up-to-date with in-house standards for new recording and storage technologies, along with gaming consoles and projector platforms, Sony was also made notable for its popular introductions of the floppy disk, Compact Disc, and Blu-ray Disc. Since 2012, Sony organized its operations into the following business segments; Imaging Products and Solutions, Game, Mobile Products and Communications, Home Entertainment and Sound, Devices, Pictures, Music, and Financial Services.
Being the first producer of the world’s first portable music player, the Walkman in 1979, Sony opened doors to further ventures that include lightweight headphones and speakers. It then ventured into the Sony Ericsson mobile phones that boast both audio and video players. Now we can see a whole variety of audio products ranging from headphones to speakers to home theatre systems.
During the early 1980s, Sony produced MSX computers and NEWS workstations, which were exclusive in Japan. In 1996, Sony introduced the world to its new VAIO brand. When the tablet computer industry began to bloom, Sony launched its Sony Tablets line of Android tablets in 2011. Since then, its Android products have been marketed under the Xperia brand for its smartphones.
With a wide range variety of digital cameras that started off with the launch of the point-and-shoot models of Cyber-shots and the digital single-lens reflex models of Alphas. Sony is only third, behind Canon and Nikon, in the line-up of largest manufacturers of cameras.
Sony started its video business with the introduction of the Trinitron brand that promotes aperture grille cathode ray tube televisions and computer monitors. The brand was discontinued in 2007. Beforehand, Sony used the LCD WEGA name for its LCD TVs before changing it into BRAVIA, a name that carries high-definition LCD televisions, projection TVs and front projectors, home cinemas and home theatre.
Sony Mobile Communications
Formerly known as Sony Ericsson is a multinational mobile phone manufacturing company that is headquartered in Tokyo. Sony Mobile Communications profited in 2003 through it’s the sales of its Sony Ericsson that was distinguished was a multimedia-capable mobile phone that included a built-in camera. Now, Sony solely focuses on the smartphone market under the Xperia brand.
Sony Computer Entertainment
Renowned exclusively for the PlayStation console line, Sony Computer Entertainment ventured into the gaming industry after a failed partnership with Nintendo. The original Play Station was announced and launched in 1994. It was not more than six years later than the PlayStation 2 came out and it quickly became the most successful in sales, selling over 150 million units eleven years after its launch. The PlayStation 3 came out to be a high-definition console and a first to use the Blu-ray format. Following this, Sony introduced the PlayStation Move—an accessory that allows control of gaming sessions through motion gestures. Sony then expanded into the portable gaming industry through the introduction of its PlayStation Portable (PSP), a gaming system that ran on the Universal Media Disc (UMD). Sony then moved its portable gaming market to a disc-less version called the PSP Go. In occurrence of bettering the PSP line like how they bettered their PlayStation line, Sony came up with the new PS Vita, in 2011 and 2012. Come 15 November 2013, the PlayStation 4 was launched.
At the 2014 GDC (Games Developer Conference), Sony’s new virtual reality technology dubbed Project Morpheus for the PlayStation 4 was announced by the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida. This makes Sony the leading virtual reality patent race, of which they are boasting both VR gaming and non-gaming software in the new console.

The South Africa Primary Education Support Initiative (SAPESI) was assisted by Sony by means financial donations and children book donations to the South Africa Mobile Library Project.

Consisting of three key charities; Make-A-Wish Canada, United Way of Canada, and EarthDay and ECOKIDS, the foundation is a non-profit organization established by Sony.
Sony Foundation and You Can
The Sony Foundation was generally a fund-raiser to help ease the troubles created from the floods of 2011 and the Victorian bushfires. You Can is a youth cancer program established by Sony.
Street Football Stadium Project
With the events of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil happening, Sony became partners with streetfootballworld and launched the Street Football Stadium Project in order to support football-based educational programmes in local communities across Latin America and Brazil.
