Toho Once in a Summer Premium Box (Japan Version)
S$ 147.20
First love comes and goes as fleetingly as summer, but the memories stay forever...

Lee Byung Hun (A Bittersweet Life) and Soo Ae (Love Letter) star in this moving romance about ten days of love that spans thirty years of time. The sophomore film from No Manners director Jo Geun Sik, Once in a Summer jumps back and forth from the present day to that fateful summer thirty years ago when the leads first meet. In 1969, Korea was in the midst of great economic changes and political turbulence under the Park Chung Hee regime; set against such chaotic times, the film brings out remarkably simple and genuine sentiments with a heartwarming, yet heartbreaking love story. Jo's lens beautifully captures the contrast between present and past, pastoral countryside and urban Seoul, and Lee Byung Hun convincingly portrays his character both in reckless youth and wizened age.

In the summer of 1969, university student Yoon Suk Young (Lee Byung Hun) goes to the countryside through a volunteer program. Coming from a wealthy but strict family, the laid-back youth revels in the simplicity of rural life, especially when he meets local librarian Jung In (Soo Ae). Suk Young immediately falls in love with the charming Jung In, and in ten days of acquaintance, they form a lifetime of memories. Jung In's cheerful front, however, hides a bitter story; her parents defected to North Korea when she was younger, and she continues to live in the shadow of her parents' actions. When Jung In travels to Seoul with Suk Young, the couple get swept up and torn apart by the political tensions of the time.

    S$ 59.90
Yazawa Ai's extremely popular manga comes to life in NANA, the exciting new film starring popular singer Nakashima Mika and Miyazaki Aoi! Released in 2005, NANA tells the story of two twenty-year-old women with the same name, but drastically different personalities.

First up, there's Osaki Nana (Nakashima Mika), a calm, cool, and collected punk rock singer who struts into Tokyo's underground punk scene looking to hit the big time. While Nana's got some ex-boyfriend issues that she's eager to put behind her, she won't allow that personal drama to interfere with her big dream. In fact, Nana's not going to stop until she's conquered Japan as the nation's top rock star! The other "Nana" of the title is Komatsu Nana (TV actress Miyazaki Aoi), who is alternatively called Hachi. Cute and cheerful, Hachi led a somewhat sheltered life and has a bad habit of falling in love too quickly. She had some relationship problems in the past, but when she falls for her high school pal Junko, she decides to follow him to Tokyo when he gets admitted to an art design school. By moving to the big city, she hopes to find love and happiness in this new locale.

By pure chance, Nana and Hachi end up meeting on a train, and thanks to a chain of coincidences involving the number seven, the two of them end up sharing the same apartment. Its number? 707! So even with all the twists of fate in their favor, can these two very different people live under the same roof and get along? And will they eventually find the happiness they've dreamed for so long? The answers are revealed in NANA, director Kentarou Ootani's winning film adaptation of the popular girl's comic!

Based on a play by Maxim Gorky, also entitled Lower Depths, Kurosawa shifts the stage from Russia to Japan's Edo period in this comedic drama. True to the title, the story takes place in a hole - a bleak tenement buried in a waste-filled landscape. The characters lives' themselves represent the bottom of a pit as well, as all of them have, one way or another, hit bottom. It is in this setting that the characters wage their fight against the miseries of life, living out their hopes and dreams with a vigor and life-force that remains strong despite their surroundings.

In this special series, the films of Akira Kurosawa have been restored and remastered on DVD, offering the highest quality video and audio experience available.. Scene chapters are set according to the scene divisions appearing on Kurosawa's screenplays. The keepcase is housed in a handsome box. A woman embarks on an unexpected journey in search of riches in the off-beat and delightful comedy Himitsu no hanazono (AKA: The Secret Garden), directed by Shinobu Yaguichi, the man responsible for the crowd-pleasing 2001 hit Waterboys! Model Naomi Nishida stars as Sakiko, a young woman with an obsession for only one thing: money! Sakiko fittingly seeks employment in a bank, but handling other people's money doesn't give her the same thrill as handling her own dough. To that end, Sakiko undertakes a truly hilarious journey that starts with armed robbery and moves through a variety of unexpected adventures and oddball encounters, with that one single light at the end of the tunnel: money! Full of ridiculous situations, unlikely and hilarious events, and laugh-out-loud absurdities, Himitsu no hanazono is an exaggerated deadpan farce that plays like Japanese manga brought to life on the big screen! As the overdrawn, off-the-wall, and yet hilariously deadpan Sakiko, Naomi Nishida turns in an impressive comic performance.

Originally released in 1952, Kurosawa Akira's Ikiru is widely regarded as one of film's most moving dramatic achievements. While Kurosawa is known in the west primarily for his samurai movies, Ikiru stands up favorably to any other work produced by the auteur over his long and storied career. Shimura Takashi plays a meek civil servant diagnosed with terminal cancer. This event brings him to the realization that his life, up to this point, has been virtually devoid of meaning. He seeks meaning and comfort form his family and activities, but remains haunted by a feeling of emptiness. Ultimately, he comes upon the answer, performing a sublime act of generosity and kindness, and at the same time coming to terms with the meaning of his life.

In this special series, the films of Akira Kurosawa have been restored and remastered on DVD, offering the highest quality video and audio experience available.. Toho Shimotsuma Monogatari (Kamikaze Girls) Special Edition (Japan Version)
    S$ 90.40
Thelma and Louise meets Cutie Honey in Kamikaze Girls, writer/director Nakashima Tetsuya's winning big screen adaptation of Takemoto Novala's cult classic novel Shimotsuma Monogatari. This quirky tale of teenage rebellion that has gone on to become a surprise hit with audiences not only in Japan, but around the world!

This wildly imaginative film depicts the peculiar friendship between two very different young women. First up, there's Ryugasaki Momoko (Fukada Kyoko from The Ring 2 and Dolls), a frustrated country girl, who finds escape from her dreary existence by fantasizing about 18th century France and dressing up in frilly baby-doll dresses, complete with pink bonnets and matching parasols. However, her prim and proper fantasy world is quickly challenged by the dramatic arrival of a new girl in town, the tough-as-nails biker chick, Shirayuri Ichiko (Tsuchiya Anna). This wild child with a seemingly permanent snarl on her face initially clashes with the girly Momoko, but eventually, this unlikely duo form an uneasy alliance, deciding to head out on a journey in search of a legendary embroiderer. Their daring quest is fraught with danger at every turn, but the two venture onward, braving the surreal, candy-colored bubble gum world that awaits them!

While making the rounds on the festival circuit, Kamikaze Girls has racked up several awards and nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Nakashima Tetsuya), Best Actress (Fukada Kyoko), and Best Supporting Actress (Tsuchiya Anna) at the Yokohama Movie Awards and numerous other trophies from the Blue Ribbon Awards, Hochi Film Awards, Kinema Jumpo Awards, and Mainichi Film Concours. Clearly, this film is something special and definitely has to be seen to be believed, so be sure to check out one of the most irreverent examples of girl power every brought to the silver screen!

Toho Studios celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the very first Godzilla film with the December 2004 release of the highly anticipated sequel, Godzilla: Final Wars, the 28th and supposedly last film in the long-running and much beloved monster series. This time around, Versus director Kitamura Ryuhei grabs hold of the directorial reins and applies his trademark visual style to the legendary Godzilla franchise. Essentially drawing material from two earlier movies in the series (Godzilla vs. Monster Zero and Destroy All Monsters to be exact), Godzilla Final Wars seeks to be the Godzilla movie to end all Godzilla movies, an intention made clear from its over-the-top premise, energetic performances, and wall-to-wall monster battles!

The film begins with Godzilla becoming trapped in ice after a battle in the Antarctic Circle. But while Godzilla hibernates for a while, things start to heat up when an alien race arrives on planet earth looking to enslave humankind. With things taking a turn for the worse, it's up to a group of paramilitary super-mutants to thwart the aliens' plans for global domination. But when the aliens start unleashing hordes of giant monsters on many of the world's most famous cities (including Shanghai, Sydney, and New York City, among others), it's up to the legendary King of the Monsters to enter the fray, taking on all challengers in a series of globe-trotting monster mashes, including one with his American counterpart from the 2000 Roland Emmerich/Dean Devlin film! Featuring contemporary CGI mixed with traditional special effects, Godzilla: Final Wars is a no-holds-barred kaiju fight fest, featuring loads of classic monsters that every die-hard Godzilla fan will be sure to recognize! Angilas, Mothra, Rodan, Gigan, King Ghidorah, and even Godzilla's son, Minilla, all make appearances, so your favorite is sure to be in Godzilla: Final Wars, a wild rollercoaster thrill ride that ends the Godzilla series with a bang!

Toho Onmyoji (Japan Version - English Subtitles)
    S$ 91.50
An engaging and exciting fantasy-adventure, Onmyoji transports the viewer to Japan's Heian period for a classic tale of good vs. evil! Set in the dark days of Ancient Japan, the film tells of the Onmyoji, an order of wise mystics who serve as counsel to the Heian Emperor. Seimei (Mansai Nomura) is the most talented onmyoji in the Emperor's court, but it's rumored that he's not actually human, and is instead a sort of half-breed demon. But as the birth of the Emperor's heir grows closer, intrigue and political strife within the kingdom threatens to tear the Emperor's family apart! It's up to Seimei to root out and subdue the potential threats, which may include his own master Doson, played by acclaimed actor Hiroyuki Sanada of The Last Emperor and Twilight Samurai. Ancient mysticism and a historical setting combine to dazzling effect as the tale of Onmyoji unfolds!

Based on famous serial novels by Baku Yumemakura, Onmyoji utilizes state-of-the-art special effects, gorgeous period detail, and a stripped-from-anime sensibility to create a crowd-pleasing spectacle of the first order! Released in Japan in 2001, Onmyoji went on to gross more than 3.1 billion Yen, and was only outperformed at the box office by the Hayao Miyazaki animated film Spirted Away. In 2003, a sequel to Onmyoji was released, fittingly titled Onmyoji 2.

Superstars Oda Yuji (the Bayside Shakedown films) and Shibasaki Kou (Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World) pair up in the Frank Capra-esque comedy Kencho no Hoshi (literally "Star of the Prefectural Government"). Television director Nishitani Hiroshi makes his big-screen directing debut with the film, based on the same-titled novel from author Katsura Nozomi. Kencho no Hoshi features an undeniably winning story and themes; it's about an arrogant man on the fast track to success, who discovers true value in life when he suffers a much deserved fall from grace. Audiences responded during the film's initial theatrical release, propelling Kencho no Hoshi to the top of the box office during its debut week.

Nomura Satoru (Oda Yuji) is an elite young bureaucrat on his way to the top. Not only does he have a large seaside development in progress, but he's due to marry the beautiful daughter of a rich and influential businessman. Satoru is humbled, however, when he's asked to connect with the common folk via a period of service in a local supermarket named Mantendo. Satoru initially clashes with his trainer, a no-nonsense part-timer named Ninomiya (Shibasaki Kou) who has little use for the obviously arrogant Satoru. Not that it matters to Satoru. He's too busy exercising his superiority - until one indignity after the next reduce him to a shadow of his inflated former self. Now at rock bottom, can Satoru regain his self-esteem and - with the help of former nemesis Ninomiya - work to save Mantendo?

The First Press Limited Edition of Kencho no Hoshi comes with a bonus disc, including interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, features with the stars, and more! This 2-disc set comes packed in a special outer case, and also includes an exclusive booklet.
