Toho Gege Standard Edition (English Subtitled) (Japan Version) at 41.90 SGD from YesAsia
Toho Gege Standard Edition (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)
S$ 41.90
YesAsia
Osawa Takao (Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World) stars in this touching film based on a bestseller novel by popular singer-songwriter Sada Masashi. The Japanese title Gege literally means "End of Summer", but the expression also refers to the completion of a period in which a monk adheres to strict ascetic rules to overcome fears. Osawa portrays elementary teacher Takayuki who is gradually losing his eyesight. He tries to hide the truth from his girlfriend Yoko (Ishida Yuriko) who has flown to Mongolia. However, she somehow finds out about his distressing fate and returns to comfort him.

S$ 127.80

A modest box office hit in 2004, the comic-based drama Umizaru found a second life as a television drama a year later. Thanks to the television drama's popularity, the series' second feature film Limit of Love Umizaru (a.k.a. Umizaru 2: Test of Trust) became the highest-grossing live-action film of 2006. Four years later, the series - which highlights the courage and hard work of rescue divers - delivers its final and biggest chapter with The Last Message. The series' original cast and crew - stars Ito Hideaki, Kato Ai, Sato Ryuta, plus director Hasumi Eiichiro and scriptwriter Yasushi Fukada - all return to give the hugely successful series a memorable farewell to its fans. As one of the first Japanese films to be converted to 3D theatrical exhibition, The Last Message once again attracted enough audiences to become the highest-grossing live-action film of the year, making it the best possible way for the series to end. After the passenger ferry disaster in Limit of Love, Daisuke (Ito Hideaki) has since been promoted to captain of his own rescue divers team, married to long-time girlfriend Kanna (Kato Ai), and a happy father to a newborn baby. However, Kanna begins to resent Daisuke's workaholic lifestyle, causing him to considering quitting the coast guards to save his family. At this time, oil starts spilling under an offshore oil platform co-developed by Japan, China, and Russia. During the rescue effort, an explosion causes Daisuke and several others to be trapped in the sinking platform. With a powerful typhoon approaching, the coast guards will have to fight time, forces of nature, and government bureaucrats to get Daisuke and the others home safely. Premium Edition comes with: Audio Commentary by Director and Producer Making Of Television special Gekitou no Futsukakan Umizaru Sensuishi Taiken Gasshuku, following 28 Fuji Television female hosts' Umizaru boot camp experience. At seventy years of age, with his career on the downswing, legendary director Akira Kurosawa turned to the help of George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola, who served as producers on Kurosawa's epic Kagemusha. At that point in time, Kagemusha was the most expensive film ever to be made in Japan. The film is set in late sixteenth-century Japan, where three clans are battling for dominance and control of the land. When Lord Shingen of the Takeda clan is mortally wounded and sure to die, he orders that his death be kept a secret in order to preserve stability, and that his shadow warrior (Kagemusha) take his place. Shingen's doppleganger is a low-level thief, spared his life because of his uncanny resemblance to Shingen. However, despite the resemblence, fate runs its course, climaxing in a bloody battlefield finale.

Thelma and Louise meets Cutie Honey in Kamikaze Girls, writer/director Nakashima Tetsuya's winning big screen adaptation of Takemoto Novala's cult classic novel Shimotsuma Monogatari. This quirky tale of teenage rebellion that has gone on to become a surprise hit with audiences not only in Japan, but around the world! This wildly imaginative film depicts the peculiar friendship between two very different young women. First up, there's Ryugasaki Momoko (Fukada Kyoko from The Ring 2 and Dolls), a frustrated country girl, who finds escape from her dreary existence by fantasizing about 18th century France and dressing up in frilly baby-doll dresses, complete with pink bonnets and matching parasols. However, her prim and proper fantasy world is quickly challenged by the dramatic arrival of a new girl in town, the tough-as-nails biker chick, Shirayuri Ichiko (Tsuchiya Anna). This wild child with a seemingly permanent snarl on her face initially clashes with the girly Momoko, but eventually, this unlikely duo form an uneasy alliance, deciding to head out on a journey in search of a legendary embroiderer. Their daring quest is fraught with danger at every turn, but the two venture onward, braving the surreal, candy-colored bubble gum world that awaits them! While making the rounds on the festival circuit, Kamikaze Girls has racked up several awards and nominations including Best Picture, Best Director (Nakashima Tetsuya), Best Actress (Fukada Kyoko), and Best Supporting Actress (Tsuchiya Anna) at the Yokohama Movie Awards and numerous other trophies from the Blue Ribbon Awards, Hochi Film Awards, Kinema Jumpo Awards, and Mainichi Film Concours. Clearly, this film is something special and definitely has to be seen to be believed, so be sure to check out one of the most irreverent examples of girl power every brought to the silver screen!

An engaging and exciting fantasy-adventure, Onmyoji transports the viewer to Japan's Heian period for a classic tale of good vs. evil! Set in the dark days of Ancient Japan, the film tells of the Onmyoji, an order of wise mystics who serve as counsel to the Heian Emperor. Seimei (Mansai Nomura) is the most talented onmyoji in the Emperor's court, but it's rumored that he's not actually human, and is instead a sort of half-breed demon. But as the birth of the Emperor's heir grows closer, intrigue and political strife within the kingdom threatens to tear the Emperor's family apart! It's up to Seimei to root out and subdue the potential threats, which may include his own master Doson, played by acclaimed actor Hiroyuki Sanada of The Last Emperor and Twilight Samurai. Ancient mysticism and a historical setting combine to dazzling effect as the tale of Onmyoji unfolds!Based on famous serial novels by Baku Yumemakura, Onmyoji utilizes state-of-the-art special effects, gorgeous period detail, and a stripped-from-anime sensibility to create a crowd-pleasing spectacle of the first order! Released in Japan in 2001, Onmyoji went on to gross more than 3.1 billion Yen, and was only outperformed at the box office by the Hayao Miyazaki animated film Spirted Away. In 2003, a sequel to Onmyoji was released, fittingly titled Onmyoji 2.

Make way for the synchronized swimmers in the crowd-pleasing zero-to-hero youth film Water Boys! Directed by Yaguchi Shinobu (Swing Girls), this hilarious and heartwarming 2001 sports comedy about a bunch of high school boys who take up synchronized swimming received eight nominations at the Japan Academy Awards and won a Best Newcomer trophy for heartthrob Tsumabuki Satoshi (Nada Sou Sou). Water Boys not only launched Tsumabuki Satoshi to fame, it also provided a start for many other newcomer actors, most notably Hiroshi Tamaki (Nodame Cantabile, Midnight Eagle). The great success and popularity of Water Boys also inspired a spin-off television drama that eventually ran for three seasons and launched even more careers. Swimming team member Suzuki (Tsumabuki Satoshi) has a problem: he's the only person on the team. Team membership skyrockets when the school gets a hot new coach, but it turns out she actually teaches synchronized swimming! Persuaded by her beauty, the guys clumsily give the unmanly sport a try, but she soon bails out for maternity leave. Refusing to give up, Suzuki and his remaining four teammates - Sato (Tamaki Hiroshi), Ohta (Miura Akifumi), Kanazawa (Kondo Koen, Ping Pong), and Saotome (Kaneko Takatoshi, Azumi) - enlist a wacky dolphin trainer (Takenaka Naoto, Nodame Cantabile) to be their new teacher! This version comes with a bonus disc packed with behind-the-scenes footage, promotional videos, deleted scenes, and many more special features!

Originally released in 1952, Kurosawa Akira's Ikiru is widely regarded as one of film's most moving dramatic achievements. While Kurosawa is known in the west primarily for his samurai movies, Ikiru stands up favorably to any other work produced by the auteur over his long and storied career. Shimura Takashi plays a meek civil servant diagnosed with terminal cancer. This event brings him to the realization that his life, up to this point, has been virtually devoid of meaning. He seeks meaning and comfort form his family and activities, but remains haunted by a feeling of emptiness. Ultimately, he comes upon the answer, performing a sublime act of generosity and kindness, and at the same time coming to terms with the meaning of his life.In this special series, the films of Akira Kurosawa have been restored and remastered on DVD, offering the highest quality video and audio experience available.. Based on a play by Maxim Gorky, also entitled Lower Depths, Kurosawa shifts the stage from Russia to Japan's Edo period in this comedic drama. True to the title, the story takes place in a hole - a bleak tenement buried in a waste-filled landscape. The characters lives' themselves represent the bottom of a pit as well, as all of them have, one way or another, hit bottom. It is in this setting that the characters wage their fight against the miseries of life, living out their hopes and dreams with a vigor and life-force that remains strong despite their surroundings. In this special series, the films of Akira Kurosawa have been restored and remastered on DVD, offering the highest quality video and audio experience available.. Superstars Oda Yuji (the Bayside Shakedown films) and Shibasaki Kou (Crying Out Love, in the Center of the World) pair up in the Frank Capra-esque comedy Kencho no Hoshi (literally "Star of the Prefectural Government"). Television director Nishitani Hiroshi makes his big-screen directing debut with the film, based on the same-titled novel from author Katsura Nozomi. Kencho no Hoshi features an undeniably winning story and themes; it's about an arrogant man on the fast track to success, who discovers true value in life when he suffers a much deserved fall from grace. Audiences responded during the film's initial theatrical release, propelling Kencho no Hoshi to the top of the box office during its debut week. Nomura Satoru (Oda Yuji) is an elite young bureaucrat on his way to the top. Not only does he have a large seaside development in progress, but he's due to marry the beautiful daughter of a rich and influential businessman. Satoru is humbled, however, when he's asked to connect with the common folk via a period of service in a local supermarket named Mantendo. Satoru initially clashes with his trainer, a no-nonsense part-timer named Ninomiya (Shibasaki Kou) who has little use for the obviously arrogant Satoru. Not that it matters to Satoru. He's too busy exercising his superiority - until one indignity after the next reduce him to a shadow of his inflated former self. Now at rock bottom, can Satoru regain his self-esteem and - with the help of former nemesis Ninomiya - work to save Mantendo? The First Press Limited Edition of Kencho no Hoshi comes with a bonus disc, including interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, features with the stars, and more! This 2-disc set comes packed in a special outer case, and also includes an exclusive booklet.

If you enjoyed the American box office hit The 40 Year Old Virgin with Steve Carell, then this similarly-themed Japanese comedy might just be right up your alley! Television director Murakami Shosuke makes his feature length directorial debut with the unconventional, "romantically-challenged" romantic comedy, Densha Otoko! Based on a supposed true story, the film stars Yamada Takayuki (from Water Boys and Crying Out Love in the Center of the World) as a twentysomething computer nerd who goes by the chat room screen named "Densha Otoko" ("Train Man"). Out of nowhere, he soon finds himself in an unfamiliar role as "protector" when he ends up saving a woman from the advances of a drunken salaryman (Osugi Ren) on a commuter train. Miki Nakatani (from Ring 2) takes on the role of a beautiful office lady who eventually takes a slight interest in this socially-inept otaku. A complete moron when it comes to the ladies, this young computer freak would rather stay in his fantasy land of anime, manga, toys, and computer games than face the real world. Thus, when faced with the proposition of dating this new woman, he turns to the anonymous chatroom pals for support, asking for tips on what just exactly he should do to win this woman's heart. Densha Otoko is ultimately a nice guy, but for whatever reason, things just haven't happened for him yet in the romance department. Despite his shyness, he's definitely looking to make some changes in his personal life. But will their advice pay off? Can there be chemistry between these two vastly different people? And is there any chance that this guy will actually grow up? The answers await in Densha Otoko, a curious spin on love, life, relationships, and the unabashed glory of otaku geekiness!
